Traveler arrested in Canada over forgotten pistol

A traveler accidentally crossed into Canada due to a GPS error. Upon requesting to turn around, he was denied. So they searched his car and found a Bersa in his console.
Canada has their own set of laws of firearms and for him accidentally breaking the law, the fault is on him. But regardless, this shows how terrible laws can get you in trouble even on the most minor offense. Be responsible gun owners out there fellas.

My old man tried to enter Canada with a pistol back in the 1980's. The border guy must have known. he told me dad to show him the gun or they were gonna tear the car apart looking for it.
My old man showed him. They confiscated it and then offered it back if he paid a fine (which he did). Then the agent told him about a drop ship operation at a store on the US side who would ship the weapon back home to you.
It was my grandfather's gun which I still have today. Glad we did not lose it. Of course we never did actually enter Canada with it, tried to though.

On a scale of 1 to ammunition shortage, how pissed should I be about this?

I flew into Canada with my shotgun back in '07. I had all my documents and such but you could tell they were serious about the whole firearms thing.
Coming back into the states was no big deal. No paperwork just had to declare it.

border agents on both sides have zero tolerance and no sense of humour - I know I cross border prolly weekly. It sucks for him but the rules on pistols are very strict in canada unless u make meth, sell drugs or are a thug ... In my fanily there is only one member that want to deal w the BS of a pistol but the laws on them havent changed since the 30s. Long guns a diff story

I went through the border at Haines once and immediately realized I had a firearm in the lock built in to the console. The Canuck found the lock box and told me to open it. I told him I lost the key, and he said to bust it open. After about 10 minutes of pretending to try an pry that thing open, he let me go.

Some are easy, some live to be assholes. You never know which one you're gonna get though. Canadians used to not give a shite at the two border crossings near here, but since 2009, everything has changed.

I heard recently that Canada got rid of its firearm registration database because it did not help solve crimes at all.
Any truth to this?
