Take your time with it, you may be a long while before you find blood, maybe a few hundred feet, but you should find something.

IMO if you find him, it will be realatively quick(less than 100 yards or so) If you got in the chest cavity, he is dead. If you didn't, you will not see him again.

FWIW I have killed about 5 hitting low in the brisket, I think all 5 circled back in just about 75 yards or so. Of course these were not head on. I have shot a few head on, but they sat down right there.

Where exactly did you put your shot to have them sit down right there? Want to learn what I could do better next time. On mine I think i was little too much left of center. Destroyed one shoulder and at least one lung. Found him fairly close the next day but it would have been nicer to not have to sleep thinking I missed.

Just center of the chest, but they were all close. I doubt I try to take that shot with any distance involved, I am just not good enough to do it.

I've searched for 3 hours and haven't seen the slightest of sign. I'm to the point of calling it and saying I missed. I'm sick about it but I hope I missed him or grazed him with no fatal shot. I'm probably going to climb up another stand I have and see if I can redeem myself. No use hunting that stand again for the remainder of the year. Tomorrow is the last day of the season, think I should forget about that stand until next year? It's been hot but after this I can't imagine it being that great. Thanks for all the words and help. I won't be taking that shot anymore at least that's what I'm telling myself.

Man i feel for you. Did you at least see where he kicked out when he stood back up to run off.

I think I did man. Where he kicked up or at least I think he did was already a disturbed area but I walked everywhere with no luck. And it is so thick in there an elephant could be ten feet from me and I wouldn't see it. These woods need some clearing badly. I went from telling myself I hit him to now saying I missed him and hoping I did.

If you knocked him down when you shot I am sure he is dead. That angle will result in zero blood and very little hair on the ground. Never a good option to take a head on shot.

He wouldn't of fallen if you didn't hit him, just unfortunate shot placement which didn't leave a blood trail.

Is it thicker at head height than ankle height?

I blindly found a deer once by laying down every few steps and looking through the under brush.

45-70, 300 grain Hornady (the problem). He was about 125 yards or more.

Cro it's thick on every level. Hell it's so thick smell can't travel through it. I'm going to tell the land owner he needs to get someone in to do some clearing. There is no telling how many big deer are in here that can travel through this crap and never be seen. And for the size of the land not many hunt it. It's basically me and two other guys but they rarely hunt.

If it is that thick, there are trails. He went down one of them. I am sure you walked or crawled them, just checking.

Your dead buck is in there. Get a dog if needed, but keep looking.

If you knocked him down, there will possibly be no exit wound and very very little blood, but I can almost guarantee you he'd dead, and likely within a hundred yards of where you shot him.

If you shot him front on and he fell as you say, and there wasn't white hair all over you hit him hard but they don't bleed from that shot. You need a dog I agree with others, he is dead.

Also while you may not want to walk in the thick stuff the deer love to so I wouldn't go messing with the thick stuff, that's what deer like.

The one time I did it it was right before close of shooting time and wasn't more than 40 yards. I wouldn't have taken the shot except for the time, season about to close and the distance.

To OP try to get a dog out there. I bet that deer is dead and not far. Wasn't there a list of guys with dogs someone posted a couple of weeks ago that helped a guy find a buck in Mississippi?

For everyone saying to get a dog, I agree. Problem is I couldn't name the first person with a deer dog in MS. I have 4-5 close friends here that hunt - 0 with dogs. If I were back home in Monroe I would have had a dog on it last night. I'll give it another 100-200 yard radius look, but I don't think I'll be able to get a dog in here. How quickly could I train my boxer to track a deer?
