When I was a brand new Peds nurse I got sick all the time. Eventually built up a stronger immunity.

I go still get sick but get over it fairly quickly. I also exercise regularly; learn to manage my stress; get the flu shot every year. Am up to date on all my immunizations(including the whooping cough booster shot you need as an adult).

And on our floor our kids are placed on various isolation depending on what they have and I follow the rules on what to wear for each isolation. I also wash my hands very frequently and use the hospital hand sanitizer during my shift.

I have a strong immune system, but when I was in the clinic I used hand sanitizer after every patient I touched and wiped my stethoscope diaphragm with an alcohol swab

they wash their hands all the time, they slowly develop antibodies, like the kid who ate dirt and now rarely (if ever) gets sick as an adult

When you graduate medical school they give you a shot that makes you immune to 99% of known diseases.

Its part of the reward for getting the MD

She means Contact vs Droplet vs Standard etc precautions and their indications with certain diseases/suspicions.

ie- you wear a gown, gloves, mask when pt has MRSA sepsis. You wear a mask when they complain of coughing up even a little blood until they are shown to be TB negative.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in order to build antibodies and develop immunity don't you actually have to contract the illness? Ala chicken pox? So that would mean that doctors would get sick quite often if they don't take preventative measures? I mean, the symptoms of being sick (coughing, fever) is actually your immune system responding to whatever bug you have.

Also, like the flu, aren't there different strains of these bugs that mutate and spread every year?

And it's a totally different mask for TB. One you have to get fitted for each year. Not the same as a regular surgical mask.

Most of our patients are in contact/droplet isolation right now due to various respiratory illnesses.
