As much as I love seeing the 4 and 5 star recruits choose LSU ,I can't help but remember a RB that was only a 2* named Jacob Hester that contributed so greatly to LSU football. I look at some of the lower rated players and like what I see. DAMN STRONG CLASS

like who.... there is only 3 3 stars and a kicker committed everyone else is at least a 4 star...

Hester was a 2* because he was a fullback. He had offers from LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Texas. He was a stud in HS.
But playing the stars game. The percentage of 2*'s that are great is far less than the higher stars.
In summation, on a macro level stars matter a lot, on a micro level (individual player) basis stars do not matter

Chark for one. Watching his highlights plus the fact he was offered with LSU on so many other receivers says something. A 4.4 time doesnt hurt either

Your right though some of these kids are highly over rated and some are very much overlooked. I like the character of kids much more than anything else and this years class is full of smart, coachable, high character kids with talent. I think we did a great job last year also. We have filled many positions of need this year, next year we need to add quality depth to these positions, with high talent high character. Some real Tigers! A few more lineman, and MD mayb Adoree and we good.

This year isn't as much about the "5 star guys" as much as it is on how we missed our in-state boys, the lies from certain recruits and not filling needs. If you compare this class to past classes, it's as good as it gets but Miles not offering Simms, which cost us Robinson hurt and caused us to lose Hootie too.
Now losing Hootie is a wash bc we got Adams but Miles inability to identify Robinson's deciding factors, after 4 years of recruiting him, is bad. Saban just didn't start talking about the number of Olinemen he's put in the nfl vs stud either. Miles chose to keep his friend around when he had a chance to replace him and with that along with not offering Simms, cost us 3 top guys in north LA.
Miles has always waited until it was broke to fix things. When your being paid what he's being paid and coaching in the hardest division of any conference, you can't afford to be reactive with issues like this but rather proactive. For that reason, we will alway be 1 step behind. Grimes was cut by auburn last year so therefore was available. If he's such a great recruiter and coach, why didn't Miles get him knowing how big of a class 2014 was going to be?

I disagree. Not offering Simms was the right call even if it did cost LSU CRob which isn't a sure bet.

Why do you say that, omegaman? Is Sims just not very good, did we have too many better prospects, or do you think he wasn't worth offering because he wasn't coming anyway?

We assume based on certain comments CRob has made that Bama offering Sims was the key to Bama landing him, but that probably isn't the whole picture. First, Saban is an elite recruiter and coach-a once in a generation talent, and as long as people judge Miles in the light of Saban, they will likely be disappointed. It's not fair to judge anyone next to Saban. Miles is a darn good coach and recruiter, but he is not Saban. Second, other factors besides Sims were likely involved in the recruiting of someone on CRob's level and caliber. Elite recruits' "friends" get offered all the time by big schools without the elite recruit following.

It was a combination of not offering Simms and keeping Stud on board. All we had working in our favor was that he grew up an LSU fan but when it came down to his future, bama had a proven track record in sending Olinemen to the nfl and his best friend. That's all on Miles for not identifying Cam's deciding factors and keying in on them.

If the kid does the right things and can play - stars do not matter.
If the kid does the wrong things and/or cannot play - stars do not matter.
They only represent, in the broadest possible terms the "consensus" of the so-called "experts" who are willing to render something like a mildly educated opinion about the kid - in all honesty.
Is it better than no information about the kid? Certainly. Is it better than it was just a few years ago? Yes, as the market determines whose information and analysis was better/worse/indifferent.
Do "stars" matter? No. The kids matter. All the stars in the world couldn't fix Cecil Collins or Ryan Perrilloux.
Meanwhile, guys like Mo Claiborne, Jonathan Zenon, the aforementioned Jacob Hester come in and make plays/win football games, despite being regarded less highly than others.

I love these threads....
Of course a 2* or a 3* can outplay their ranking and a 5* or 4* can under perform. Yet countless other people who get paid to figure this thing out show that the teams that are winning championships are doing it with the majority 4* and 5* players.
Don't think people realize it breaks down to something like
50-60 5* players a year
100-250 4* players a year
500-1000 3* players a year
too many to count 2* and 1* players

im just not impressed with c rob, and I may be wrong but he seems to be very overrated, I would be thinking the same thing even if he committed to lsu.....

It's a disturbing pattern that that, thankfully, is being addressed. Finally.

Of the 9 O-Linemen picked in the 1st Round of the NFL Draft last year, only 2 were rated above a 3 star coming out of High School.
Of course those two came from Alabama, lol...

When I see things like this, the question that always comes to my mind is: Do these kids really need/crave THAT much attention? Personally, coaches calling and texting me constantly would aggravate the hell out of me. Kids like this just seem egocentric.
