What tactical reason explains why Les Miles let Coach Stud go at this time.

It can only be for a recruiting advantage; otherwise you wait until after national signing day. I expect a decision very soon. Miles must be thinking that the right coach can help him land some big OL recruits that are on the fence. Like Frank Herron and Tashawn Bower last year, I think there may be some talent that we don't know about yet. I can think of no other explanation for letting Stud go now. For me, I think Kevin Mawae is a no brainer.
Mawae has received more OL instruction than any coach in college or the NFL and has actually implemented that instruction in an NFL game at the highest level. Hell, the man may be in the NFL Hall of Fame one day. What OL recruit wouldn't want to play for that man? I bet Kevin Mawae would be an fantastic coach and an tremendous recruiter of all types of players, especially offensive linemen.

you are probably right but Stud has been with Miles for the past 7 years it could also be so that Stud catches on somewhere too. Fact is Miles does care about these guys also even if he has to make tough decisions like firing them.

Probably wants to be able to interview top candidates before they land somewhere else

It is possible that he has another coach in mind to bring in that he thinks could sway recruits.
It is also possible that everyone wanted to go ahead and cut ties now.

Miles would be taking a risk hiring a guy who has no real experience as a coach.

Bmath, you got an "A" on this math test.
3 + 3 = 6
3 + 3 = 6

I was not knocking you, it is just a strange observation.

Im not saying the guy cant coach but I dont understand why 70-80% on this board automatically assume because he played in the pros he can coach the position. Many times the smartest people/most athletic are the WORST teachers because it comes so easily to them they cant relate their knowledge and skill set to those it comes less naturally to.

Meh the Oline is Miles forte I don't think giving a future NFL hall of famer a shot at coaching the Oline would be that huge of a risk.
Not certainly it is a slight risk but I think people are making too big of a deal out of it

LSU announcing that a new OL coach is "in the works" before the 1/15/14 deadline for underclassmen to declare for NFL draft eligibility could be another reason for letting Stud go at this time.
That revelation may influence one or two veteran offensive linemen to return rather than declare for the NFL draft. May not. Just my thoughts.

Please quantify that statement via a link or research done. Is there really no other coach that's received as much instruction?

...OR, you have your eyes on a specific NFL OL coach and want to be able to jump before all of the NFL openings are filled.
...OR, you want to give Stud the opportunity to be available for the multiple openings right now.
...OR, a decision that was intended to be private became public and you have to make a decision to go public because you think the uncertainty sheds a negative light on the program for too long during an important time.

Prob wont make the hire until national signing day, that way he gets that extra in home visit to use

The OC wanted it.
This is exactly it. If an oline coach and an OC are not on the same page, it can be devastating. Auburn found that out in 08 when they hired Tony Franklin but wouldn't let him bring his oline coach with him. I would be surprised if the new oline coach was not tied to Coach Cam! If not, then I will be wrong.

This is also true of many college/university professors, but they still stand and profess information. Mawae could be an excellent coach, but the job history may prevent serious consideration. It also has to do with chemistry--a lot of people may not be able to mesh with Miles, and (like Cam Cameron) they may need to have past experience with him. Les also has very good portfolios on some of those being considered.

I haven't seen where Todd Washington has interviewed. Does anyone know if he's been interviewed?
There are a lot of coaching changes going on between LSU, UGA, and Alabama along with some competing interest from Texas. Will we be able to get the guys we want or just those that are left?
