Point pulled from T-Bob thread: How much did 1/9/12 hurt future attendance?

I saw someone say that after LSU, which had put together the greatest regular season resume in CFB history, was "rewarded" with having to play the third place team from the SEC that it had already defeated on its home field for the national title, that it caused them to step back and not be as passionate about the team or attending the games. What sayeth the rant: Did 1/9/12 adversely impact the fan base to a point of caring less?

I have noticed the stands emptying a lot easier since the 2011 season than at any time before it. I also have attended less games than I used to and also have stepped back to have a reality check and to care more about the more important things in life. I think part of that is maturity, but part of that also was knowing that Oklahoma State deserved the title game berth that year over Alabama, and that LSU's team was less enthused about an undeserved rematch (and played like it) than it would have been against Oklahoma State. I also think ESPN robbed the game of the Miles-versus-his-previous school storyline to worship Saban - whom they gave an open mic to for the entire weekend of the SEC Championship to promote Alabama - which was so absurd because if they had been deserving they would have been playing that weekend. But I digress...

This thread is NOT about whether Alabama or Okie State deserved to be there, or about the game itself. It is solely about the impact of what happened then on the fan base since then, attendance wise and otherwise.

I'll hang up and listen......

fwiw, if you delete all of that shite about playing bama out, you will get a lot better responses...

to answer your question....I don't think it changed attendance one bit...but it damn sure changed my outlook in that I don't let myself get nearly as emotionally invested in the game/season any more...

It's a reasonable argument.

The great fan attendance/passion in CFB and at LSU in particular is largely due to the fact that the regular season is held at high importance. 2011 proved this notion wrong, and so it potentially lessened some fans' passion.

you could also mention sec/slive and the bridge schedule of the last two years.

lsu schedule was very difficult.
al schedule was set up for cg run.
thank gawd for auburn and the davis runback.
the ot was already set up for al to win.

go back for years and see how sec has cheated lsu out of chances!

edit: p.s. also, alleva screwed up lobbying for lsu in the mulligan and the bridge schedules. alleva needs to accept the blame/shame.

we need a 30on30 regarding getting screwed by sec.

oh, and those who don't agree with me: gfy

I haven't been to a game since. And I have season tickets. I've given them away.

To answer your question, very little.

Complacency about being good for the last 13 straight seasons is why attendance is less. Damn near everyone has been to every game imaginable in the last 13 years.

Fwiw we didn't sell out our SEC championship allotment in 2011 and that was to see our best team in those 13 years. Why? Been there, done that.

I can only speak for myself, but the debacle of 1/9/12 did something to me. I no longer get as emotionally invested as I once did. Just doesn't seem worth it. So, I imagine many feel the same way and I think that one game has definitely had some repurcussions. While, I wouldn't claim it is the only factor that led to the decline of fan attendance, I would argue it has had an impact.

The incredible and unprecedented injustice that was inflicted upon LSU i think definitely had an impact on a lot of people, myself included. I moved to Austin shorty after but it would not stop me from attending the games and I still love LSU just as as much as i did before. That said it did sort of make me sit back and kind of put things into perspective.

It's a mixture of things I think. Better TVs and high costs to attend games are national. Specific to LSU, I do believe 1/9/12 affected enthusiasm. I also think the moribund offenses and sloppy inconsistent play in 2009, 2010, 2012 affects fans. When its obvious early on that the team won't seriously contend for a NC. When the games are painful to watch bc of no forward pass. Losing to Bama in 2012 and 2013 has also hurt bc the 1/9/12 wound hasn't been returned.

I think all LSU has to do is beat Bama and win a BCS bowl. I think college football in general needs to sell beer.

It affected me completely. I haven't been to an away game since and I quit going to all the homes games. Why spend money to get pissed off? I am thinking about making the Wisconsin game but I'm torn. I just don't feel the same about the program itself anymore and it's not a huge priority for me.

Sunshine pumping Powerhouse LSU fan: We have the worst fans in the country. Even though i've only been to LSU games, i know for a fact only LSU fans are the worst. This is why attendance is low.

Realist that sees college football is changing: Tailgating is the shiznit! Flat Screen, never ending booze, plenty of space, bathroom right here, food, music...other games to flip through, and plenty of people to socialize with.....

OH, and what's the price of that ticket again?

Beer will eventually be sold in stadiums to offer a crumb to entice fans back.

I do think that game caused some ripples through out the program and possibly a little of it is attendance related.

I agree 100%. Something has happened to the game day experience over the last 2 years. Fans are more spoiled... Better to sit in the lot with the big screen and 10 foot away toilet with never ending flow of booze... etc., etc. I think you've hit on something else though. I went to Kent State game with 30 friends from Kent/Ohio. They were laughing AT the venerable Tiger Stadium crowd... of which there wasn't one. They had been to Bama 2 years prior and said LSU stadium experience, "Sux compared to Bama..." Direct quotes... Embarrassing. Still a Tiger but something is lacking when the 3rd quarter shows only about 15,000 people still in the stands. Compare that and our basketball game day to the scene at Michigan State the other night... What's happened to Tiger Fans? It's more than 1/9/12.

There's something else here as well... I think the whole Jordan Jefferson playing over Lee put a knot in my gut. It still does. Something happened in New Orleans that week. Everyone knows it. And it cast a pall over the "passion" for the team/game. The rumors flying around were all UNREAL. But there had to be truth in some of them... And it just left a bad taste. Losing wasn't the problem. It was knowing that we left players on the bench without explanation as we all watch (and still vividly see) that pained tarantula-in-my-underwear look on JJ's face... geez... what a look... Haunting.
