This is supposed to be the coldest blast in a quarter century. What ya got where you are?

Shreveport: It was a balmy 58 early this morning and then the front came through with a violence two hours ago. Strong winds from the north and temp is dropping fast. It's now 38. Twenty degrees in 2 hours.

Good thing you're not playing for the Green Bay Packers.

On a just as crazy note, the high Thursday will be 60.

Welcome to Louisiana:

A 45 degree swing in a 3 day span.

Are you guys taking any precautions tonight? Our low will be 15 so I'm gonna set up the dishwasher before I go to bed. When I get up at 2 a.m. for a drink of water I'm gonna hit the 'start' button. It will run for an hour.
My exterior bibs are wrapped.
I also have a small ceramic heater in the garage that I'm gonna turn on before I go to bed.

Snowy owls spotted in Florida, they know when to GTFO.

quote:

A snowy owl flies over a dune at Little Talbot Island State Park Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 in Jacksonville, Fla. One of the Arctic birds has been spotted since last week in Little Talbot Island State Park. Park services specialist Peter Maholland says bird watchers have been flocking to northeast Florida to catch a glimpse of the white bird. It's only the third-ever sighting of a snowy owl confirmed in Florida.

Snowy owl invasion of US extends to Fla.

With the garage door closed the heater keeps it 20 degrees warmer than no heater. That keeps my central unit in the house from turning on... I set my central heat at 60 when I go to bed.

When I wake up at 5 I turn the ceramic heater off since I'll be opening the garage door at 6.

Gotcha.

I thought maybe your car couldn't deal with the cold. If so I was gonna say your car would really hate the weather up here.

We are still a couple of hours away from the front. Low tonight is 19. High tomorrow is 28 followed by a low tomorrow night of 12. Real feel tomorrow day time will be single digits.

The first wise thing you have done in years. You could use the day to spruce up the costumes for Mardi Gras.

I have lived and worked in Milwaukee, Aurora Illinois and St Louis and you can write the idea of being above the Mason/Dixon line off my list ever again in winter. The St Louis gig came with two months of working on the Miss. river. The last day of that period it was 0 with a wind chill of -35.

It's January in the northern hemisphere. That means its winter. It gets cold.

How did people survive winter before the media existed to tell them to dress warm and stay out of the elements?

Yeah we really have 4 seasons up here, too bad one of them lasts so long, nothing like ice fishing for 4 months or more.
