270 Ammo Question
Posted on 12/31/13 at 12:33 pm

I have a .270 but don't hunt deer. At least I haven't in a long time. I still may one day and I may use to hunt hogs.
I want to stock up some on ammo and yesterday at Academy I saw some for $35.00 and some for $50.00. I tend to assume that higher cost equals higher quality but didn't want to drop more money than I had to without knowing for sure.
Is there that big a difference in quality to warrant $20.00 more? tia

I use Winchester power points in my 270. $20 a box and killed every deer I shot at.

I shoot the 150 grain and never had any problems. I have padnas that shoot high dollar rifles with high dollar scopes and custom ammo and don't do any better than me as far as hunting goes.

Remington core lokts work just fine.

some for $50.00
i went last night and that was all they had, i laughed and walked out
it would be very difficult for me to justify paying much more than $1/round

thanks guys. Glad I didn't buy any.

Dead is dead, but bullet performance DOES matter and IS highly debatable.
No offense, but I'm guessing from the wording of your question, you don't know the difference between the two loads you priced. That being the case, its probably not worth the difference.
ETA........especially if you hunt hogs it could matter.
Core Lokts are great, I've also used with great success for different applications Nosler Partitions, Nosler Ballistic Tips and am now exclusively using (and REALLY like) Barnes Vortex

I've shot Winchester ballistic tips and fusion through my 270wsm and killed deer with both. Like those guys said dead is dead. If you hit em in the lungs/heart with almost anything they'll die. However I started loading Barnes bullets and just got the Barnes tsxs and they blow crap up

I use the Winchester power points for $19/box and have had great performance on deer with the 130 grain. I'm sure Remington corelokt is just as good, but I've been using these for 20+ years.
The premium ammo is supposed to hold together better/penetrate more. It is not really needed for deer or smaller piggies. I would get it for larger game like elk. For Hogs, use 150 grain cheap stuff and shoot as many as you possibly can.

130gr in a .270 gives a nice flat trajectory. I shoot winchester ballistic silvertips and have had great success on deer. 1.5 inches high at 100 and dead on at 200. Premium factory hunting ammo has gotten out of sight and sadly $2/rnd is the norm and cheaper than some out there. The ted nugent rounds loaded with the barnes ttsx bullets are in the $3/round range.

I haven't personally. My brother was at a camp a few weeks ago and a hunter out there took a nice buck with one. Bullet damage was impressive. Those solid copper bullets have near 100% weight retention and hit like a hammer. Hell just the loose bullets for reloading are $0.72 each. Would cost you damn near $2 a round to hand load them yourself with new brass.

150 grain Core Lokts in my 270 for many years and never lost a deer after hitting it. I can't remember trailing one within 150 yards with my 270, come to think of it.

IIRC today's Core Lokt rounds are better (improved design) than they were in teh "old"days."
That being said, the latest generation of teh Barnes stuff is about the most impressive of the "new" bullets.

Remington Core-Lokt 130 gr @ $20 bucks at Walmarks. Kill anything with it.

I shoot the Barnes tsx but load them myself and they sure as hell aren't 3$ a round they are bad to the bone. I've never seen the Ted nugents
ETA: I use old brass
