I'm about to have to put my 10.5 yr old Great Dane down. Wife and kid have petted on her all afternoon and the hole is dug. I'm just waiting till the 4yr old goes to bed now.
My question is.... will a 22LR w/ CCI hollow point be sufficient to do the job immediately or should I go bigger to make sure she doesnt suffer? All day i had planned onm using the 22 but am now second guessign myself.

.22, but being a Great Dane make sure the dog is in the hole already.

Be damn sure. Use a noose.

I'm not a fan of hollow points for shooting things in the head, but it'll work.

i have grew up and lived in the country and on farms my whole life, i know people do this. But i just couldnt put my own dog down. I will have to take to the vet. I would be terrified if i didnt do the job and the dog was hurt and screaming and last thing it remembered was me hurting it

It would be worth it to me to pay the vet. Don't think I could pull the trigger on a family member...

I trust myself more than the vet. I'd hate for my dog's last time alive to be in a vet's office.

How about a good friend to do it?

Standard tip?
My only concern is with her size.

Depends who it is and what the situation is.
It's a shitty situation and there's no way to make it not shitty.

I have 2 friends that have offered. I would rather do it myself.

A .22 is good for 10' alligators and prolapsed cows so it'll work.
Just make sure you don't show up with one shot.

Completely agree, everybody has their own way, hope and pray mine goes peacefully and quietly in her sleep, a long, long time from now

look the vet gives them a sedative first its a peaceful way to go
and you dont think your dog wont know youre about to kill it
and what if you miss and the dog is still alive
i think its a shitty way to send your dog out that way

I think it's shitty to pawn it off on somebody else.
There's no way to make it less shitty.

Downshift, what time are you free this week? I have a little yapping bastard that I need assistance with.
I'm only half joking. if he wakes up one of the babies one more time I'll give you a call.

We had a Rottweiler get hit by a truck when I was about 15, my dad always worked out of town and my mom happened to be with him that weekend. I put her down with a .22lr.
I hadn't thought about it until this thread, but it wasn't that bad and seeing her suffering after getting hit by that truck it was fairly easy.
