Chicken, you honestly think Saban isn't a possibility?

They could still end up getting a quality coach, but I don't see it being the name Texas fans are hoping for.

Chicken do you really think Texas wouldn't hire a black man as head coach? What do you make of the racial aspect that the Aggies keep bringing up?

Saban has got to be still in play. This is jimmy sexton we're talking about here.
Not because he's signed an extension, but his choice of words spoken over the weekend tells me Saban to Texas is dead...
but this is Saban/Sexton we're talking about.

They won't throw that kind of money at a one year HC.

Whatever Texas would offer Malzahn this year, Auburn could compete with.
Agreed. The rumor of 10 mil for Saban doesn't mean that will be offered to all of these coaches.

very good question...my guess is that they might be able to make more money coaching at UT with fewer work hours...
My old college coach who coached in the NFL and now coaches at LSU told me he rather coach in the NFL due to the hours.(I fill like I said "coach" too many times lol) NFL is more like a 9-5 job with a couple of months off if your not in the playoffs. College is more like 12-14 hour days with barely 2 weeks off due to recruiting. In the NFL each team has their own scouting team and GM. The coaches get to discuss what their needs are but they don't have to do the job finding them. He also mentioned that in college you have to worry a bit more about your players than in the NFL.
Just thought y'all might would like a little insight from a coaches prospective.
ETA: To say he said it was more like a 9-5, it isn't a 9-5. Sorry about that. They do a lot of film work and break down.

starting to remind me of Florida's search after Spurrier left...Foley flew all over the country interviewing top names and ended up with Ron Zook.
Bingo.
The purported money is going to intrigue some people, but at the end of the day I don't think UT is going to pull a "big time" coach like Meyer or Harbaugh. I think Charlie Strong would definitely go. Franklin likely would as well (there's a ceiling at Vandy, and he's probably close to hitting it) Can Texas get over the fact that not everyone is falling all over themselves to take the job enough to make a good hire?
I think the circumstances are hurting Texas's chances as well. Malzhan would probably be interested, but he's not leaving with Auburn getting ready to play for the NC. Fisher would probably be less interested and he's in the same boat as Malzhan. Kelly would likely love to be the HC, but he can't right now. I don't think Tomlin leaves the Steelers. He's the HC for one of the best and most loyal owenership families in the NFL. Mora just past on his alma mater. I doubt he leaves for TX.
This is purely my opinion, but if I were UT I'd give Mark Richt a call. He's a relatively young guy who's been successful at UGA but has seemed to be on the "hot seat" for the last 5-6 years. Very good QB developer who would be going to a state known for producing great QBs. Recruiting would probably be a little bit easier in TX, and the competition wouldn't be as tough as in the SEC. He's been at UGA for over 10 years now, and might be silently looking for a change of scenery. With his record-setting QB moving on, now would probably be the perfect time to make a move.

quote:Meyer is fine where he is, Midwest guy at the pre-eminent midwest school
Urban Meyer:

Jim Harbaugh:
quote:intriguing but I think his agent reached out to Texas solely to create a bargaining chip if the Rooney's decide to rebuild and dont want to do it with Tomlin
Mike Tomlin:
quote:Frankly the job is too big for him IMHO and I wouldn't want to be the Texas AD that hired him and had him learn the job on the fly.
Gus Malzahn:

Jimbo Fisher:
Both Fisher and Malzahn are going to squash this because of distractions going into Jan 6.
quote:possibility, cant think of any reason why he would not be interested
Jim Mora, Jr.:
quote:Another guy that I think the job is too big for.
Charlie Strong:
quote:kind of old for Texas right now, when they should be looking for a guy that will stabilize the program and be there for 10 years. What has he done to deserve the job?
Mark Dantonio:
quote:huge wildcard, way too much risk, and you will have to wait until Denver is out of the playoffs.
Jack Del Rio:
When I say the job is too big for some people, it is the reason why Texas said they wanted a BCS or Super Bowl caliber coach. Someone that has performed and succeeded at the highest level and has a reputation that will stand up to the scrutiny from the hiring and the grind of the program

Urban: No, why would he leave Ohio State with the lack of competition and it being his home?
Harbaugh: No.
Tomlin: No.
Fisher: Why would he leave Fla State? He's got a good thing going and the schools are essentially the same.
Strong: What has he done to earn a tier 1 job like Texas?
Malzahn: too much of a wildcard. Needs to be at a
"little brother" school to do well; does amazing things as an underdog.
Michigan state guy: Meh, okay....but he's already got a good thing going. Why bother leaving?
Mora: I might be able to see it, but right now he's doing well turning that program around at UCLA with a chance to knock USC out for years to come. Why bother?
The only guy I could possibly see is Del Rio.
or Saban

Jim Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin both have been loosely mentioned as candidates for the open University of Texas job that Mack Brown will vacate after the bowl season. But it sounds like that speculation involves wishful thinking from Texas' side.

A source close to Tomlin, meanwhile, told Rapoport that that Tomlin's inclusion on the list is "absurd."
