Definitely the putting the villains' soul/essence into objects. And old wise graybeard wizards.
Anything else?

Other than a mythical type story line.
They are nothing like each other.
At least to me.

How much does LOTR borrow from the bible and ancient greek and roman mythical journey epics?

They both borrow from other stories. Even ASOIAF borrowed from LOTR and other fantasy stories to some extent.

LOTR shits all over HP

I actually googled it after posting the OP.
I agree they are pretty different. But some other things pointed out:
- Giant man eating spiders that have to be dealt with.
- Active and violent trees
- One article mentioned a sychopantic underling of the bad guy that had "worm" in their name. But 'm not sure who that is in HP (I'm not ultra familiar with it.
- Dementors were called kind of a more easily thwarted version of the Nazgul. But I think that may be stretching it.

I was watching these movies a while back with my, now ex, girlfriend and she loves them. I told her that it stole a ton from LOTR and we needed to watch those.

Except, I would argue that Tolkien does it deliberately, much to weave those ideas together and pay homage to them. Tolkien's initial idea was to write a mythical tale for the UK. So he HAD to borrow from the history, the real history. He had a point.
On the other hand, Rowling just rips off what she writes. And she "borrows" from a lot more than Tolkien.

I've never read any of the HP books. But they've been showing the movies and I've watched most of them now. I gotta say, I think they are pretty good movies. Of course they are not LOTR's good (for me at least). But I found them enjoyable.
Still no desire to read the books though.

Tolkien didn't actually invent the quest storyline but he perfected it and almost all fantasy epics since LOTR follow that mold.
JK Rowling is pretty open about all she took from CS Lewis and Tolkien.

I don't see many if any similarities between ASOIAF and LOTR

Tolkein developed the standalone fantasy world. Martin himself would say he took some inspiration from it.

Martin may have been inspired to create a world by Tolkien but that's like saying that Kurt Cobain ripped off Mozart because they both played music.
I can't think of any similarities to LOTR inside the ASOIAF story

There's a lot of differences, but Martin was inspired by Tolkien, even though they both have completely different takes on their fantasy universes. Both are very complete universes and there are certain fantasy elements; LOTR you have elves, GoT has White Walkers, dragons, etc. ASOIAF/Got=lots of grey characters; LOTR: you're either good or evil.

Right.
Martin was inspired by Tolkien but it's absolutely impossible to write a fantasy story and not be inspired by the man who created the genre. But saying GRRM "borrowed" aspects of Tolkiens story implies that there are things that were taken out of LOTR and placed in ASOIAF and I can't see where that's the case.
Except possibly the naming of swords and that occurred in real life so
