I like the fact that he decided not to kick a short FG earlier in the 4th quarter, and then went for a 57 yard FG at the buzzer. What a stupid idiotic series of coaching decisions.

I think on the surface it looks irrational.

I bet Saban doesn't sleep for at least a month after losing this way. Games where everyone second guesses him drives him insane.

It'll drive him to UT for 10 years and 100 mil, that's for sure.

Those irrational Gump fans will he blasting him for this call for months, probably years.

Gotcha.

I still think it was the right call. People also aren't factoring in that he happened to kick it absolutely perfect for the return. Auburn dude barely moved at all.

I mean he was right. There was a second left.

Agreed.

It was in the field of play so it wasn't close either.

The call that baffles me is going for it on 4th down around Auburn's 20 with 5 minutes left. A FG there wins it and he doesn't have the confidence to kick it there, but then he has the confidence to kick a 57 yard FG at the end? wtf

Going for the earlier FG leaves a lot of time on the clock,

Having the freshman try the 57 yarder? Obviously Saban had been impressed with him at practice

Easy to sit back and call plays now

Most people in this thread are arguing the result and not the thought process.

Kicking the FG was the most statistically likely play of giving Bama the win or OT with a very small chance of losing.

The most unlikely outcome occurred but the result shouldn't be used to 2nd guess Sabans decision making.

The return is unlikely but the kick getting blocked is probably more likely than him making it.

Not what I said though. I said the FG attempt was the most likely play to give Bama the win.

I never said him making it was the most likely outcome.
