There have been way too many over-reactions after last night. Some people need to relax and be patient with this team.
Can't believe I just read this.

Hickey has definitely had his struggles from the line (as has just about every other LSU player)
I asked Coach McCray about free throws yesterday at the pre-game meal. He said they practice free throws all the time. He said it wasn't a case of mechanics, but a lack of confidence and the ability to completely relax at the line. Always a worry in the back of their heads.
He said that was the biggest difficulty to overcome for college kids, he's seen it all over and he has credentials to back that up:
2 seasons as an Assist. coach at UCLA
Assist. coach at Mercer
Assist. coach at Chipola Junior College
Graduate assist. coach at Florida State for 2 seasons
He's been a skill development trainer since 2004 for a training program (“Fundamentals.”) for NBA players.
He also does specific off-season training programs for players including Dwight Howard, John Wall, Jarvis Hayes, Anthony Morrow, Jarrett Jack, Acie Law, amongst others.
So I think he knows what he's talking about!
We're really lucky to have him here.
It's the psychological aspect, when you're alone at the line, all attention on you, basically shooting cold, not in the action or flow of the game.
The practice environment is nothing like a game. And practicing your shot in your free time is the same.
I don't know why Hickey and even Stringer yesterday struggle. They seem to be tough-minded.
Maybe they need a sports psychologist more than a coach?

some cases it comes down to technique but it is mostly a confidence thing, or furthermore a belief thing. you have to believe the ball is going through the net. practice, practice, practice. same thing applies to just shooting the ball in general.
hickey has always struggled from the line, so you know when he steps up there his mindet is likely going to be more of 'i hope i don't miss these' rather than 'i am going to make these.' stringer is a pretty confident foul shooter so it may have been a case of technique, too much spin on the ball, too much movement, etc. he's really the one guy i trust at the line. mickey shot them pretty well last night.
johnny should get eddie P to come spend some time with these guys.

quote:Stringer struggled? He's a good career shooter and will be fine. I'll have to pay more attention to Hickey. I think he just has bad mechanics / no solid routine but I had forgotten from last year and I didn't really pay attention when he did this year. All I remember is that he avoids contact like the plague and hoists up a lot of ill advised 3 pointers as a result. If he could get confidence in it then his whole game should improve.

JOB3 just seems to have slightly bad mechanics. An extra hitch where he pauses while holding the ball high in one hand as I recall.

Hickey is probably better off the bench providing a spark for the team. Not a true point guard.
1) Hickey looks for his shot a lot, making him more of a shooting guard.
2) He doesn't pass well into the post, and passing isn't a strong point. His best attributes are press defense and streaky 3 point shooting.
3) He is an electric player and most teams need a spark off of the bench. Quarterman is pass first while Hickey is shoot first.
Its not really a knock on him. He reminds me a lot of Vinnie "The Microwave" Johnson who played for the Pistons.

Yep, for him anyway. That's my impression anyhow. Don't know the stats on it. Just remembered hearing the clangs.

He'll charge an exorbitant fee. And he's obnoxious, even Shaq fired him!

TQ should be benched until he changes his jersey number. #55 on a PG pisses me off

Let's not get into classifying players into 'positions' too much.
1) There's nothing wrong with a PG looking for his own shot.
2) Hickey's a good passer. I'm not sure where this is coming from.
3) I agree to an extent with your third point.
Hickey's a ball-handler above all else. That's why he's our PG. I like Hickey's game in transition (at times) & coming off high ball screens.

true, but the point of the thread is him being the starter and he hasn't developed into a STARTER…Hickey is much better.
When the season first started and I heard he was starting, it moved a little bit…in my head, I thought holy shite Quarterman is already better than Hickey??

Smart move by JJ to play Q like this. Lots of unwarranted critisizm of Q. This isn't another DJ Welter situation. Calm down.

I will be really interested to see Martin in the lineup. Hopefully, he will show a nice stroke from the outside.
Right now, my big concern is outside shooting. Stringer can shoot, although like most shooters he will be cold sometimes. Hickey can as well sometimes. That's it.
I was hoping Morgan was going to show a more improved shot, but I haven't seen it yet.
Hammink and TQ don't look like they can shoot very well.
We have some horses down low. Hopefully the shooting will come around. I believe hitting the outside open shots will be the difference between a good and great team.
As for TQ vs AH, I'm glad that TQ is getting meaningful time early. We will need him come SEC play.

This kind of ties into what you just said, but I'm a little concerned about our guard play overall. Not saying we have bad guards or anything like that. I just see that as a deficiency with this team. Having Hornsby available would help (I hate that he has to sit out this season).

I compare Q to a poor mans MCW. Lengthy 6'6" combo guard. I think over time he could develop into a great player, but as of now, he should be a 6th man type

if quarterman hit a couple of those wide open shots he missed everyone would be talking about how good his stat line was. He has a good looking 3 point shot and i'll bet money they eventually start falling. He also has the ability to get to the rim even though his layup game is on par with mines. He is excellent at feeding the post and never turns the ball over. I see why johnny is starting him but with hickey on the floor we will put up points faster because of the havoc he causes.

I know it's not CJJ style of play, but I seem to remember a team not too long ago who reached the Final Four with great inside play and only one legitimate shooter from outside. That said, hopefully someone else can develop out there

Well, yesterday was a decent game for them. Hickey went 2 for 2 and Stringer was 1 for 2. They both normally get to the line more though.
