The Bad Lieutenant: N.O. - why do you think it was a huge flop?

The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
This film was well received by the critics, had a decent sized $25M production budget, and starred a big name blockbuster actor. However it only brought in a little over $5M from the box office ($10M gross total, but the studios typically get around 52-55% of that number). this movie lost at least $20M.

It was too weird for some people. And I don't believe Nic Cage is a big box office draw. It's too bad because Nic Cage is the best leading man fit for Werner Herzog since Klaus Kinski.

not now of course, but back in 2009 he was still a big draw for the most part. about 8 months before this film he was in "Knowing" that did over $183M on a $50M budget.

I don't think it was widely released. Wasn't promoted much either.

It was a combination of a slim release (both timeframe and theater spread), and marketing from marketers that had no idea how to market it (say that 5 times fast).
Herzog doesn't really aim for money, studios know that, so I think everyone is cool with the reception.
Truth.

I completely understand people not liking this movie but Herzog and unhinged Cage was a win for me.

I don't even remember when this movie came out.
Was it a wide release?
I don't remember any ads.
I didn't see it until a friend forced me to.
I'm glad he did.

It's not a remake per se. It's similar to the original in that they both have "Bad Lieutenant" in the title and the main character is a drug-addled cop. The original is about Christian redemption and this one is just Herzog being Herzog.

I guess we know which type of person this reviewer would see you as. filmdrunk.uproxx.com

a lot of people will not like this movie. But I believe I can provide a handy guide to the type of person who will or won’t.
I illustrate by way of a story: Last week for Halloween, I dressed in a giant penguin suit with a fake mustache, an outfit I thought was pretty self-explanatory. And yet, a significant number of people came up to me throughout the night to ask, “What are you supposed to be?”
I mentioned this to a friend (known to FilmDrunk as Punchface Thunderdog), and he said, “People treat costumes the same way they treat tattoos and Pulp Fiction. ‘OMG the suitcase contained his soul, I totally figured it out LOL!’”
Which is to say, the kind of people who see a tattoo of a dragon farting a rose and immediately ask, “What does this mean?” are probably the same kind of people who expect/demand reductive clarification. They require a simple answer like, “Rosebud is a sled!” or “the dragon queef is a metaphor for my dead father!” That way, they can set the thing aside, and keep their lives simple and orderly. Suffice to say, I suspect that this is the type of person who will not enjoy Bad Lieutenant. But if you’re the type who recognizes a certain brand of absurdity and appreciates it for its own merit (or even sees in it a more intuitive, less academic logic, i.e., because it’s fun)… Well. You, sir or madame, are in luck.

This. Several scenes were awkward and hard to watch due to the over-the-top ridiculousness.

Because no one who saw the first one would be jumping at the chance to queue up for the second.

Well if that's the case there you go.
I had heard of the idea of the movie but never knew it had been completed

Me and the wife watched this about two years ago and really liked. I had no idea until tonight that Herzog directed it.

It wasn't remotely as uncomfortable to watch as the first one.
