$700- Build a deer rifle

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but if you had $700 to spend on a rifle scope combination for deer, what would it be?
Hunting mostly in the open, most shots would be between 100-250 yards.

I'm seeing the remington 700's listed at $699.

H&R .35 whelen - $275
Leupold VXii 3-9x40 - $300
And now you're got a gun you can use during primitive season too. Zeroed at 200 yds, it will shoot 1.5" high at 100, 4" low at 250, and 8.8" low at 300.

Rem Model 700 is the clear choice if that is the actual price. I have also heard pretty good things on the Savage.
Optics could push you over $700. I would lean toward a low end Zeiss if I could expand the budget a hair.

My dad bought a savage .308 and he said he likes it. I've shot it a few times and honestly, at those distances, I don't know that the brand of the rifle makes all that much of a difference as long as it's comfortable to shoulder. I'm also looking at Tikkas.

Great option, but I don't see how you're going to outfit it with an optic for that price.

I bought a very nice used one for $400 a few years ago. Brand new they're north of $600

Yea, I would have to find a deal, or get one used. Bass pro has them listed at $680

I sold it for $300
Deals can be had, but you'll have to look long and hard to find one for that price. Mine was sold about 20 minutes after I listed it.

Used model 70 Winchester then a scope way before a Remington academy special.
Academy sells sub par weapons.

Bought my son a .308 Savage combo at BPS a couple years ago for Christmas. Shoots like a champ. I think I paid ~$450 for it.
Now that I think about it, it was Dick's. I had bought my other son a Savage combo .30-06 the year prior at BPS.

Luckily, I don't need it right now, or even for this season. I am just looking to build another nice deer rifle. I'll probably look around after the season and see if I can find a deal. Appreciate it.

Then hit up pawn shops for meth head specials. You can get a quality rifle for much less than what you would pay at the stores.

I say buy the scope you want for the budget you have (i.e., if you have a $2500 budget, a scope in the $1000-$1500 is appropriate, if you have a $700 budget, not so much). The cheapest scope I would put on a rifle is a Leupold VXii. So that's $300 gone. Now use the rest to find the best gun you can get for your money.
