I am in the market for a primitive weapon for Mississippi...My question is... What is the OB opinion of 35 Remington for primitive firearms? I don't hear much talk about the round...i hear 35whelen, 45-70 and 444.....not much on 35rem....What is the reason? I'll hang up and listen....

ok i live in ms.. here is the deal. This year is the lasy year for "primitive weapon". So if you want to buy one just for this year get the cheapest one you can find. Next yr we are dropping primitive weapon and it will be weapon of choice (yes this is official) With that said, the best primitive now is the 35 whelen by far, its basically a 30-06. Take all this info for what its worth

I have a CVA Elite Stalker 35 Whelen and it gets the job done. I actually like the way it holds. single shot 30.06 is about what it is.

Will the season be the same length? It sounds like if you had a crossbow and a 30-06 you could deer hunt for 4 straight months.

What it is worth, is 500.00 after it is said and done and I beleive you just saved me that much...I had no idea they were doing away with it....Great info...rather spend my cash on a crossbow now...or they doing away with that as well? Just curious...Thanks for the info for sure.

nope crossbow is here to stay man. and yes it you had a crossbow or bow and high powered rifle you can hunt ms next year from oct-feb... again, this year we have primitive weapon season and can use the 35s and 45-70, but starting 2014 primitive weapon is out the window. bow/crossbow oct-mid nov then weapon of choice

It is my understanding that bow season will not change. They are doing away with the primitive weapon season in December.

I thought I read that this would be only applied to private land. I may be wrong but thought I would put that out there.

I have a permit issued from MDWF that specifically states .35 whelen is allowed.
