Could the stock market tank if a debt deal isn't done by the deadline?

If neither side blinks and somehow a deal isn't done on time, what are the broader ramifications of that? Will the markets tank? Could we go into another recession? Could it affect the global economy?

Could it? Of course.
Will it? Only if the petulant child instructs the Secretary of the Treasury to NOT service US debt with existing revenues.

Market is up now that Moody's has come out and said that the US will not default on creditors and our rating will not be downgraded.

isn't cash a good investment if the market tanks?

I think he's interested in scooping up some investments on the cheap.
Same way in 2008, if you have the cash when the market tanks itself to inject, it'll pay off greatly in the long run.

I have almost all cash
deciding whether I should use it to
a) invest
or
b) start my emergency fund

This is what I'm referring to....
(Posted on 2/14/09 at 11:48 am) March 6, 2009 was the bottom of the stock market during the 2007/2009 financial crisis
