People complaining about defensive woes..

I have seen a few say that they believe our players have regressed. They even bring up the fact of Sonic Sam and company regressing last year. I do think that the ones saying this are on to something. I posted sometime last year about how I thought our players always regressed the past few years. Jefferson, Montgomery, Mingo, Reid, Loston, Barrow, Hilliard, Blue, Hurst, Baker, Mills, Collins, and a lot of others have regressed over the years. I think some of these guys regressing was the coaching specifically the offensive players. This year only the backup running backs have looked worse, but all others have looked great. On defense we keep seeing a few guys regress every year.
I do believe Chavis is a really good coach, but is he as good as we think or has sheer talent made his defenses look great. When you have Mathieu, Peterson, Claiborne, Minter, etc. it's kind of hard to not have good defense.
I think we will continue to see players progress on offense with Cam here. Will we continue to see players regress on defense under Chavis?
To be continued...

Yea, they regressed on defense straight to the NFL!

Look how much worse Minter got! During his freshman year he was among the elite third stringers in the nation. By the time he left he was barely good enough for the pros. Which brings up a point; why are the pros so interested in all of these regressing players.

Yes, the NFL loves the fact that LSU defensive players regress, that's why they make it a point to draft so many of them.
Not sure how your other 579 posts performed but I feel like #580 has regressed.

there may be a few players that have actually regressed, but not many. Typically what you're seeing are players who may have looked good in limited roles early on, but as time went on they weren't able to grow into a complete player. Another factor is who they were playing with, or next to, or who was blocking for them, etc. A DT playing next to a high draft pick compared to playing next to a first year starter, for example.

With all the losses we've experienced on defense to the NFL, I think we're about where we expected to be right now. We're just very spoiled because our defense has had some serious bragging rights for the last several years. We'll continue to get better but this year's D won't reach the level of past year's D....at least not this year.

You nailed it. Thank God we got rid of some of them to the NFL.

I think there is clearly regression at some positions, but I think in some cases it is on the players or injuries and other times on coaching.
I think Chavis, while a good LBer coach, is often overrated at it. Barrow has regressed, but when you lose leadership like Minter showed last season in can happen.
DL issues are youth and injuries.
Now DBs, I'd very much say the regression is from coaching, whether people want to believe it or not. Outside of Mills last season, every DB regressed. Literally every single one.
Reid, Simon, and Loston (outside of concussing himself). Mills was great, but clearly has regressed this year as have Collins and Martin.
Their ball awareness and coverage technique has just been very poor.
That said, youth and inexperience will be issues, and sometimes these players may be asked to do things that aren't their strengths.

I didn't see regression last year but I saw some high draft picks absolutely quit after the Bama loss.
