Colleges Push Pros to Change Their Draft Rules

As the NCAA faces the greatest existential peril in its history and scrambles for fundamental reforms by next summer, its power brokers are floating a radical solution for saving college sports: expanding professional sports.
NCAA president Mark Emmert recently raised the idea of allowing athletes to go pro straight out of high school instead of effectively forcing them to attend college. NFL rules currently require football players to wait three years after graduating high school, and the NBA restricts draft eligibility to those who are 19 and one year removed from high school.
Last week, Big Ten Conference commissioner Jim Delany echoed Emmert: "Why is it our job to be minor leagues for professional sports?" he said.
Other commissioners of major conferences offered their support in interviews this week with The Wall Street Journal. Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby said he was "in complete agreement" with those statements. "I don't think it makes any sense to force kids to go to college who don't want an education," he said.

There is no comparison between 18 yr. olds and 21-22 yr olds. For a league that is so concerned about safety, the NFL would have to be huge hypocrites to allow kids to go to the NFL straight out of HS.

this is either a move to try and get money from the pros, or the most pointless bullshite PR move in modern sports history

Players of out high school would die in the NFL.
It's a different kind of sport than baseball or basketball.

I don't think its as radical as it sounds because I can't see NFL teams signing 17 and 18 year olds. High school kids aren't going to be physically ready for the NFL. Nothing like the NBA. They'll still be forced by the market to go to college and refine their game.

I read it as exactly what they said. They don't want the NCAA to be the minor leagues for the NFL. Essentially, I think they want the NFL to create a minor league system and allow players to opt into the NFL minor leagues instead of attending college if they want to do that instead.

ELIMINATE ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Some entrepeneurs can start a minor league for young football players
And colleges can go back to having actual student-athletes
/problem solved

Use the baseball rules in every sport.
Out of high school or 3 years out.

If Mike Slive doesn't want it, it ain't happening

If there was a market for these players to get paid to play football, someone would create a league and hire them.
But nobody has done that.
Because they are not worth it.
They are welcome to start their own league and prove me wrong.

Let's say all of the top high school football players went to a NFL farm league instead of college. I think it would officially kill college football. I know i would rather watch the NFL farm league over a bunch of lesser talent in college football.

Can you imagine a 26 year old man tackling a 19 year old kid? He would break in half. This is pretty idiotic.
Oh this idea came from Jim Delaney? No fricking wonder.

The jump from high school to college is so vast. Can anyone imagine the jump from 5A High School football to the NFL?

The reason the NCAA is profitable as a minor league is because you have built in allegiances due to the colleges and universities. Some random minor league football team would draw no one and would be ignored and unprofitable.

Basis for this movement is: Big10 and others think the SEC plays with a bunch of kids who are not really students. That their kids are smart enough to go to college and ours are not. Thus they say it's unfair because this is suppose to be college athletics.

I think Delaney is right (for once).
He knows that its the NCAA and its structure that makes kids like Johnny Football marketable, NOT JFF's unique talent.
How much is JFF's autograph worth if he is playing for the Omaha Hawks, a farm team for the Jacksonville Jaguars?
The NFL uses age discrimination to, in effect, use college football as a cost free minor league system. If you take away the age restriction, what is the problem? 18 year olds aren't ready for the NFL? OK, then don't draft them. A 57 year old Joe Montana is not physically fit to play in the NFL, but there is no need to implement a rule setting an age ceiling on NFL players.

As I've stated before, I agree with Delaney on this.
Team speed will go down. Team intelligence will go up.

Delany has to frick everything up, and the herd will listen to him.
He just wants the SEC athletes to skip school so he has an advantage
