yea, that would only result in a massive frick you and I'm going to smear your dealership's name into the dirt as much as possible. I would probably put flyers around town over something like that.

Oh they'll give it back.
But they'll tie you up in the game more and make it their initiative rather than yours. (before you go....)

Yea, they'll put it away for "security" purposes. Then the guy with the key is with another customer, at lunch, etc.

Have you not had this happen to you before at a car dealership? They don't really hold it hostage. It just takes a bit of waiting to get it back. "oh it's in my bosses office, hold on" "dang the boss is out at lunch, I'm getting mary to bring up the spare key" "must've changed the lock last weekend, boss will be back in just a minute"

No. I generally make them make a copy of it and give it back immediately. Maybe I'm just the paranoid type, but just handing something like that over seems crazy.

Ive never had any dealership I went to ask me for that, and I cant imagine it makes a difference.

Bought my new Ford f150 a week ago. First dealer, Planet Ford in Spring, we went to tried this tactic. Gave him keys to truck I was trading, and after he came back, we were waiting on the internet guy, I asked the guy for my keys back and he said that he was going to give them to the internet guy. I told him he didn't need them and I'd like my keys back. He said it was their policy. I told him it was my policy not to buy a truck from someone that wouldn't give me my key back. He gave it back. This helped because we walked out on them after getting fed up with them and the way they treated us.
Ended up going 10 min down the road and buying the truck from Lone Star Ford, and got a GREAT deal!

They are the worst. frick em. I was ready to deal with them on a ford explorer a few years back. They upped the price by $135 at the last minute. Walked out and made the purchase at Mac Haik(sp) ford.

They were horrible!! Upped the price on the internet by $1000 from the day before. They were also only going to give me $2000 for my trade in when I was getting $5k everywhere else. Told them I wanted the price from day before and max for trade in. The salesman left saying he hadn't had lunch yet, and the interent guy would take care of us. When they came back again with another high price, we got up and left. Salesman had the nerve to call me last Monday wanting to know if we found a truck yet. I told him yep about 15 min after I left you, and then gave him some advice about how not to f it up next time.

Yep. Sent out a request to a few shops. Best price for the style i requested was ~$32k. They replied that they would beat that easily. Got there and they offered the exact same price. After some haggling, they dropped it by exactly $1. I said "fine lets do this." I sat down to sign the papers and they added $135 processing fee. I was livid. Walked out.

Paid $24,100 + TTL for a Jetta TDI Premium yesterday at 0%. After doing some research and comps from other dealers, I thought this was fair.
Only issue was they tried to sell me GAP Insurance at $700 and he told me that I could only buy it at the point of purchase. Told him he was lying and I'm not paying it.
Got it for $20/yr through my Insurance Agent.

He said that all the sales offices are bugged. The salesman will be called to "step outside" for a few minutes while the dealership listens to you and the wife discuss the transaction.
Pretty sure this is illegal as shite...in La. anyway.

we used truecar.com from the previous post rec. We actually got a price below what the average paid was listed as in our area. Now that could be altered date perhaps but as was previously said, we feel we got a good deal and it was an easy experience.

Based on TrueCar it looks like we got a Great Price, but not Unusually Low.

Here is a trivia question on negotiations: What are the 2 best days in the month to buy a car?
I go with the obvious last day of the month and first day of the month.

Why would this be illegal?
Especially if they aren't recording it.
It would make perfect sense why they stick to the song and dance of going to the manager.

I'm in the market here soon for a 4x4 supercrew lariat and any advice in the purchase process would be appreciated.

I've heard last day or two of the quarter is a good time.
Oh and you can count me in the "frick Planet Ford" camp. If you give them any indication that you aren't a complete moron they won't give you the time of day. If you're looking at buying a Ford, there's Mac Haik and then there's the rest.
