Something to think about...who is the Saints vertical deep threat?

The Saints have long since had a speedy deep threat on offense ever since Sean Payton and Drew Brees have come to New Orleans. This year, however, Joseph Morgan, who was supposed to supplant Devery Henderson as the deep threat, was injured and lost for the year. Duh, we all know that.
During the preseason, I expected Kenny Stills to come out as the deep threat. However, it seems as the Saints are comfortable going long to Nick Toon, too. The Steve Breaston and Salim Hakim experiments are over (I'm assuming there's no way Hakim makes the team).
So, who do the Saints go long with? Stills? Toon? Both? Who cares? If I had to choose from the receivers projected to be on the team today, I'd actually go with Lance Moore. I know he's not the fastest receiver, but he is a receiver that will go get the ball with his hands and make a play. I just figured it was something to consider since a primarily vertical route has been a staple in the offense for a long time.

And both are well rounded receivers who are more than just deep threats.

Sorry, I thought you said deep throat.

To say I'm not concerned about our passing game would be an understatement

both players have shown they can be deep threats. pretty scary if you're facing the saints in 4WR sets.

quote:Definitely not concerned. But it has been something for defenses to plan for. But we don't have that one speed threat like we have had in past seasons.

Last year we got away from what made our offense so effective for years: our short to intermediate passing game. We'll take our shots here and there, but that has to come back.

They all go deep.

quote:He's not the fastest, and he's also one of the smallest. While he MIGHT make a play, he does the least in deforming the defensive coverage (which is what your "threat" should do in this offense), and you also lose him running underneath the deep route (which is where he shines).

Hakim is profoundly raw and I seriously doubt he makes it, but he might have helped his case yesterday. He caught one, and drew an interference call on another. If he were to line up in the regular season, the safety absolutely has to make sure he's deep enough to account for him. He's the one guy who truly forces the safeties back.
I think Stills is sufficiently good to fill the role.
