Problems with Marine VHF radio

Having problems with my VHF radio on my boat where the boat next to me hears static when I try and transmit and I hear nothing when they try and transmit to me. I can get weather channels fine which has me confused in not knowing whether its my antenna or radio giving me trouble. Anybody know of a way to test one or the other? Or should I just try and start with replacing antenna?

How close was the other boat's Vhf radio?

Stupid question did you adjust the squelch when communicating to hear? The static can often be eliminated by the squelch (sp?) adjustment.

Was about 100yds away from other boat.
yes, I adjusted the squelch!

Other than adjusting the squelch have you gone on channel 16 and asked for a radio check?

I've had that problem, if I'm reading you right, and it was the mic. I could receive, but nobody could hear me. I had it another time and it was the radio itself.

were you broadcasting a 1 watt or full power? that close at full power is always problematic.

Opposite, I can transmit, just cant receive. Just going to pickup new radio, can't imagine an antenna going bad.

I'm assuming you've already played with all the knobs
Probably a shitted out RF gain knob

You've prolly got a bad connection/grounding out at the antennae connection at the radio.
Its a coax and if one of the wires is shorting at the connection.....
Unscrew the connection and see if clean.
Is the ground the little wires soldered to the connection or loosie ?

No radio suggestion, but I'll bump your thread and ask a question...
Is there a VHF channel to monitor just to listen in? Like a channel 19 on the CB?

Yeah like capt said channel 16 is a hailing channel and the one Coast Guard will monitor. Hang out screwing around on there too much and they get pissed. All the bridges stand by on 13. You wouldn't believe how many assholes pull up to the pontoon bridge just down from my office and are blowing air horns and shite because they don't have a vhf in their 20' pleasure boat.

From my experiences while working as a radio tech in the USMC it sounds like bad coax cable or your connections are bad on your mic. Try cleaning them and or replacing the cables. Your ant. wiring may be going out or shorting somewhere. Hope that helps and fixes the issue
