Elysium

Never tried to do a review so bare with me.
Saw it last night. My thoughts, will try to leave out spoilers
One of those with great cinematography. I really wish they'd shown more of Elysium and how it worked but I guess it wasn't relevant from the story.
Acting:
Damon got the job done. I don't think his role required a very complex character but he played it as good as need be. The rising action was stupid and anyone that works in any type of industrial setting will laugh.
I thought the district 9 guy got it done but overdid it towards the end. I read yesterday that he improvd on all his lines in D9 (which I thought were great) and was allowed to do a lot of it in Elysium as well. I thought it stuck out that some of the lines weren't very well thought out in this one. Kind of cheesy at times.
Why they put Jodi Foster as an authoritative political figure with a proper accent was beyond me. She seemed very out of place in the whole thing, but maybe im just used to her having the southern lesbian draw.
I read the other threads before it came out about the political undertones. They were very overbearing the entire movie, even more than I expected. The funny thing is, the attitude of the people on earth pissed me off. Earth is overpopulated and ran down by what appears to be minorities... hell i'd go live on a floating paradise spaceship too.
I might be drawing too many broad conclusions, but it felt like the aftermath of Atlas Shrugged through the eyes of the poor.
Overall, i'd give it 6.5. Very predictable but entertaining due to pretty cool sci fi visuals. The political crap is shoved down your throat and they don't try in the least to make it discreet. When the credits rolled I turned to my date and said, "so I guess they all get obamaphones now too"
I would wait to see it on redbox. Not worth 20 at the box office.

Put a spoiler warning in your title if there are some, or at least indicate if there aren't any. I started reading your post and it looked like there would be spoilers, so I stopped reading. Others may not stop and get pissy when they read something they didn't want to.

I saw it. I'll keep mine spoiler free.
Okay I'm what many would consider to be a Libertarian. I didn't find any of the political overtones to be overbearing at all. They were there, but not BAM!, at least not for me. Then again, if anything, Blomkamp was trying to prove one point when he actually provided a great argument for another.
The story itself while nothing groundbreaking was competent and the character's motivations made sense. I thought they were going to go with one ending (they sure as hell teased it), but went with another.
Visually, it did evoke a lot of the same slummy imagery that was present throughout District 9, while mixing in the gorgeous shots of space and of and on Elysium itself.
They also winked at and lightly explored a lot of little sci-fi ideas and displayed some pretty cool future tech in the movie. For me, if you are going to create a future film universe, you have to give me some cool future tech and they delivered at an elite level here. Best part of the film for me.
Well, best part other than the chic who played Frey being exceptionally
I feel like I should probably know her name, but she definitely has my attention now.
Now for the negatives. The accents. Jodie Foster's accent was annoying. I get that they didn't want her to have a heavy Southern drawl in the future and such, but damn. Just have her pull back a little bit. As bad as hers was, Copley/Kruger's was even worse. Physically, yeah he owned the screen. He had some money lines, but damn it felt like I was listening to someone from China trying to do a South African accent without having their voice go over a certain decibel level. Whomever said he owned the screen when he was sharing it with Damon was wrong. They were more or less even. Neither did exceedingly well in their roles at least not for me.
There is another thing that bothered me, but its more of a nitpick and a somewhat spoilery one at that. There was nothing really wrong with the ending, yet a moment at the end just kind of made me momentarily say "well frick". I'll explain that when we get to spoilers or whatever.
Overall, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Isn't anything really groundbreaking, but is good sci-fi film. If you don't go in looking to have your political beliefs offended, you will enjoy this movie thoroughly.

I saw it today.... Reviews above covers a lot of it.
Other than a reference to "homeland security" there were no political undertones. Much ado about nothing.
I liked it. Will watch again when it comes out on DVD.
If you like sci-if/district 9 then I suggest you go see it.

Oh there were definitely some socialist-heavy undertones, but they weren't heavy-handed and like I said, didn't succeed in what their intent was (proved that socialism was terrible concept and that ultimately the poor/weak/unintelligent, need the wealthy/strong/intelligent and that without them, they go to shite).

Saw it last night. Enjoyed it. Fun watch.
The political undertones are really only apparent if you're looking for them or just mildly savvy. Not overbearing at all.

hold on flip. let me start by saying im the biggest district 9 fan ever. loved it. that being said, i didnt have too high of hopes for elysium. boy was i right. i wont put any spoilers, although the story was so vanilla that spoilers shouldnt even make people mad.
the cinematography singlehandedly ruined the movie. up there with the worst camera work ive ever seen. every fight scene consisted of rapid back and forth shots and shaky handling to mask the inept choreography. even the non fight scenes were shot extremely poorly. i couldnt get over it.
acting was pretty bad all around save for copley, though he overacted more and more as the movie went on. damon was bad as usual, the gf was unbelievable, and jodie foster was especially shitty. her accent was face palm worthy. it was like they told her "you're on elysium, so come up with a sophisticated and pretentious accent." it was laughably bad.
the writing was very weak. tons of redundant, expository dialogue. it's like blomkamp thought the audience consisted of retards. the first 30 minutes is almost all expository dialogue. there was a stupid number of childhood flashbacks in order to artificially generate emotion and feeling, but they all completely failed. between the flashbacks and cheesy present day references to the past, the ending made me want to vomit. there are ridiculous plot manipulations to get certain characters in certain places and it is so bad.
i even tried watching this movie from a popcorn only fan's perspective, and it still sucked. the action sequences are so poorly done that it's not even enjoyable in that regard. even totes mcgotes and tiger1242 wont like this movie.
to sum it up, heed my warning and save the $12 it costs to see this movie. wait for a redbox, or, better yet, free viewing on a movie channel. it is not worth it.
i refuse to believe blomkamp was involved. no way he wrote or directed this. i hope he's not a 1 hit wonder, because he's a really smart guy.

This movie has absolutely no similarities to Jackson's famous works.
