I've only read a couple comments in the thread but I'll make the assumption that there are typical reactions from people of different backgrounds.
Setting aside whatever particulars may separate this case from other cases similar to it IMO:
1) The word is verboten because it is an insult that implies an absence of value for a whole category of people. It is close to impossible to use the word in a way that does not imply that meaning... even when used in a sense that is ironic (by a member of that same group). Words like cracker don't have the same effect IMO because they don't imply the same absence of personal value.
2) Because of the common use of the word by black people as much or more than white people the word remains a prominent part of our culture. This is a really bad thing on the balance. Even (or perhaps even more) when it is used by black people with respect to other black people it has very negative implications for everyone who hears the word. The implication at some level is still that all "n----s" have no value and the speaker being black if anything makes that insult worse because as a member of that group the speaker shows an absence of self esteem on the basis of belonging to that group.
3) It is really easy for people who are not black - especially white people who hear the word used frequently - to fail to understand the primary reason not to use the word. It may be that Riley was using it especially because he felt his toughness or manhood were being questioned and he responded with similar verbiage to what many black people of his type would respond with. The primary failure in this situation might be the common use of the word by people around Riley that might have made Riley (as a white person whose value was not in question) fail to understand the implications of a person who is not a member of the group using a word that implies a group has no value. Again, it is not the same thing to use an insult like the word cracker because that is a derivative insult that lacks the cultural implication that white people do not have value because they are white.

I stand corrected. PTI spent four segments. Opening about the reaction to his lack of suspension and how Goodell needed to do more, Vick's thoughts on it, 5 Good Minutes with Herm Edwards discussing it, then the segment during Sports Center. 12/24 minutes was spent on this crap!
