Yep. Worked myself from a mediocre player into an All-State player. No competition with 3 to 4 star players necessary. Haha.

Where did you play in college?
Posted on 7/27/13 at 9:20 am to MikeTheTiger2893
Composite or division all state? For 2a?
Posted on 7/27/13 at 9:56 am to GhostofJackson
Composite. Got into an Ivy League school on my own merit and decided not to play although the coaches wanted me too. Had to choose 2 of 3 social, academic and athletic. Wasn't gonna stop boozing.
Edit: Wasn't anywhere near good enough to play at a solid D-1 program. Just out worked and wanted it more than kids that were 10x better athletes than me.

C'mon, you don't give old Coach Butch some credit for spitting knowledge onto you? He is a class act at Newman, and he had some great one-liners.

Haha. There's no doubt coach ferris' wisdom was a driving factor in my intellectual growth.

Congrats and good luck Mr. Merritt. All the best to you and your son and thanks for the info on him. Please post more during the season.

I'm assuming that sports is going to play a bigger role for Kirk in making that college decision. Perhaps he wants to make a major division 1 program. Also, what decade were you all state?
Posted on 7/27/13 at 10:57 am to GhostofJackson
I never said Kirk made the wrong decision. Just disagree with your generalization.
This decade.
This decade.

Hey, I'll give you this, your civil enough to not get into a flame contest, so I'd be happy to argue with you anytime! Haha. But my generalizations come from my interactions with kids and coaches throughout the past couple decades from Newman. I always got a very nonchalant demeanor from the kids as if success would come, or if it didn't they have plenty of other things in life going for them.
To be fair, I use to work with a couple guys who were Greenies from back in the 60s. They had great stories about coach Fitzgerald and some other coaches around at that time. By their account, sports actually, at one point, was a lot more serious at Newman in the past than it is now. Although I do believe they are on the right track with the athletes they are getting into their school. Several of these kids aren't afraid to put in the work in the offseason which seems to have been a problem for some sports. I still think, overall, they will have some years before they can win a state title, even with the watered down brackets. Should the LHSAA even exist in a year or two, I have to go with Calvary winning the next two years with riverside the runner up.

Kirk is a great athlete and this year at Destrehan will help his exposure on a national level. I can see this kid really showing up in camp and grabbing a lot of attention next year.
From what i've seen so far, this kid is dominating. It seems like he gets a td every time they throw it his way. Merritt, Smith, and Matthews will all be d1 players in the 2015 class IMO.
