sorry but used auto sales havent killed the car market.
much higher percentage of Americans also HAVE to have a car as well.. Also - the cuts after driving a new car off the lot are much much more steep than in the gaming market.. and there is no lease option for the normal gamer..
Also - if you buy a new car, you keep it for 2-3 years (for a lease, closest thing you have to a lease for games is gamefly, and people keep games 2-3 weeks on average there) and then buy a new one or you don't get rid of it for another 15.. another one of those "bad analogies" if I might say so myself.

I liked the Roulette analogy better.
I figured more people know blackjack but the 8 black happened to me once.
Chick spinning hit it every 4th spin like 4 times in a row so I put $100 on it the 5th time and hit $3500 (35 to 1 odds on the table) and tripled my money I put on the black side bet. I walked away with over $4K.

I wouldn't mind if Sony changed their mind and banned used sales. The only issue I have with that banishment is that it takes away (sort of) my right to resell the game. Be it at a garage sale, gamestop, or Craigslist. I would assume there would be an online marketplace to exchange licenses, though.
I think a big hindrance to this is that it alienates retailers in a somewhat transition period of the industry. Gaming is moving into a digital ecosystem, but there just isn't the infrastructure to support it in the states, much less worldwide. So they will still need retailers to sell their games. As of right now, gamestop is probably the biggest retailer of games. As a manufacturer, you can't just tell a retailer, much less your biggest one, to frick off when you need them in order to reach your entire audience.

how do we know that Microsoft would have had intelligent, Steam-like pricing when Sony's store is currently terrible?
You are correct since Sony and MS are the same company there is no way MS would do something without Sony telling them it was OK.

no, it starts with fairly pricing digital games.
I'm sorry but once again the fact that they charge full price for digital copies is just wrong.
Games went from carts to CDs b/c it made it cheaper for everyone. No longer did you have to worry about paying $90 for a mega cart.
Going from disk to digital should do the exact same thing yet they have resisted it.
Also, its still going to be hard for people to justify downloading all their games when Sony and Microsoft are such a-holes about the prices for higher capacity hard drives.
I can get a 3 terabyte hard drive for $100 but going from an XBox 4gb to a 250gb is a $80 increase in price! (not to mention that complete lame arse move of still charging $50 for a WiFi adapter that should have been included in every f-ing machine from the get go)

No one was. Xbone was still going to allow used games sales just on a limited basis and also forcing Gamestop to share the second hand pie.

You can buy a digital download code from anywhere. You don't need physical locations for that.

No normal hard drives work on consoles? I never had to try.
Posted on 7/23/13 at 11:49 am to Mr Gardoki
Not on MS consoles.
Sony consoles have interchangeable hard drives.
MS does support flash drive storage tho.

I don't understand why you think they can take that sort of hit while also competing against their very own products in the used games market. Used games are a billion dollar industry for Gamestop alone. That's not taking into consideration the other retailers that all deal used games.
How many devs and publishers do you think can fight that and at the same time knock substantial cost off their games digitally and still come out profitable?
Activision has the most operating cash out of anyone and I read just yesterday even that is only at $400 million. Yea $400 million sounds like a lot but their parent company has $600 million in debts. You want them to hang around but you also want them to compete with a billion dollar used games market while offering you discounted new copies? First party license is the only way they make money off of a game besides excessive DLC which is another thing people bitch about.
The thing is that gaming consumers want their cake and to eat it too but then when another THQ happens and they get even shittier products due to less competition they want to bitch about it all being the devs and publishers faults.
It's a no win for anyone in it's current form and the consumer ultimately loses the most it's just that many are too short sighted to see it.

I do have an interest in supporting developers and publishers that directly support my hobby with more games. $5 is nothing to me in the long run if it ensures we don't see another THQ go under. That creates less competition in the market place and the worse things get for us as consumers.
You still don't get it. That extra $5 isn't going to the developer. They sell the discs to the stores (whether brick and mortar or online retailers) at a set wholesale price. The retailers then set the prices. If you want to pay more for the same product, go ahead, but don't expect the rest of us to hop on because you are stupid enough to believe some developers sob story propaganda.

They do on PS. I have a WD Blue something 1TB in mine. As long as its 2.5" you're good.

You can use any laptop HD on Xbox very easily. Youtube it. I imagine you could put an SSD in if you felt like it though I haven't searched to confirm.
You can also go to ebay and buy cheap Xbox HDs ready to go.

lol, game pricing isn't done the same way it's done in the States as it is in other parts of the world.
Here, you never see sales on hardware. Everything is the MSRP. For software, games launch at MSRP and dwindle time from there through time and market demand.
In the UK (where the information leaked), retailers are given a lot more margin on sales and thus you see price drops of software and hardware all the time, and often on day 1. No one actually pays the MSRP over there.
That said, you could also argue that the price increase was correcting now that the pound isn't as valuable (especially considering those prices were set in 2005/6).

True, but that is like boasting a feature on an iphone that you need to jailbreak to enjoy.
Its easy to jailbreak, but not really an option for many.

No you obviously don't get it. When you buy a used game over a new game then that is one less copy the publisher and devs move and one less they get paid on. So in a sense you saving $5 on a used game actually cost them more since their license fee per game is more than $5.

Yes, but once stock and inventory go down, they request more shipments from the publisher. That's how they get more money. If people choose to buy new version over used, they have to replenish that new stock. While you're directly putting the money towards the publisher/developer, it's the only way to support them at retail.

At the same time, one pre-release copy that sony sells as DD on the PSN for $10 less is one less copy that can used to trade in.

Funny. Just yesterday Amazon had the $299 PS3 bundle on sale for $199 but that never happens.
