it seems that the Heat wooed Oden at Chili's

A 2nd guaranteed year that's a player option will probably only be offered by the Pelicans and maybe Kings
I'm all in for offering this guy a contract. But good Lord if we, or anyone, guarantees 2 years to him. This was supposed to be a low risk, high reward type thing. A 2 year guarantee is nowhere near that.
This is not Monty selling the Pels, it's the Pels being irresponsible and it's high risk.

How is it a high risk? Oden when healthy could be a very good center, and if he's not healthy he retires which then voids yr 2.

disagree...2 years at 3M?
...won't be an issue at all, especially considering we have a lot of money already tied up.

When healthy....never. Could be very good....probably so.

If his injury is not career ending, but serious enough to keep him off the floor for stretches of the year, he collects, Pels suffer.

Yeah, we've pretty much set ourselves up to start using exceptions next year, so giving Oden that extra year won't have any effect on FA unless we end up keeping both Smiht and Aminu, with Oden's contract + the MLE pushing us into the tax. That's not very likely, though.

In a league where kwame brown and Darko get 5 million a yr to do nothing 1.5 million isn't that bad when you think about it

Thrillhouse has it right. The only thing the 2nd year does is make Benson choose between paying the tax or replacing Aminu/Smith with cheaper versions of themselves.
I think we're more likely to offer a Robin Lopez style, team option deal. Oden doesn't have nearly the leverage he thinks he has, that's why his agent is working the room by bringing in more bidders. His agent has done an excellent job of creating the appearance of leverage, but I think we all know there are really only 3 choices, Spurs, Heat, Pelicans. The Heat have no depth at center putting pressure on Oden to play, the Spurs have too much depth at center making Oden an afterthought, and the Pelicans may have a lot of depth at center, but it's the right kind of depth, the kind Oden can easily beat out if healthy. It's also the kind that's still good enough to step in for a few weeks if he feels he needs to rest his shot knees.

I'm guessing there is no video of his workout.

There were reports this week that after signing guard Nate Robinson to a free agent deal, the Nuggets could be working on a sign-and-trade deal for Mozgov.
The Spurs have emerged as a team interested in Mozgov and they could be the team trying to construct a deal with Denver.

If the Spurs drop out it seems like there'd be less pressure on Miami to offer more money as they could go all in on the contention angle which would play in our favor if we ever had a real chance to begin with.

Regardless of how productive Greg Oden is, if we get him, the it definitely would show me that Del has the ability to compete with the big name teams when recruiting players to New Orleans.
That aspect is probably the most underrated skill by a GM. The Great GM's can keep their star players and recruit other star players to play with their team.

I could be wrong but I don't think we are anywhere near the Tax threshold, which is ~70M even though the cap is set at ~58M

We have 6 players making $53m combined next year. Let's say Morrow picks up his player option and we let Miller walk. That's ~$54.5m between 7 players. Then Whithey making around $600k, and, hypothetically, Oden at $3m, let's call it an even $58m for 9 players. Minimum roster holds are ~$500k, so another $2m set aside for the other 4 spots. That's $60m total. Say we extend both Smith and Aminu at $4m/yr. That's $8m total, or $7m against the cap since you're getting rid of two of those roster holds. Now we're at $67m in payroll with a ~$5m MLE available. That's putting us right around the tax.

Payroll for the core 6 next year (Holiday/Gordon/Evans/Anderson/Davis/Rivers) will be over $52 million. Add in Oden at $2.65 million, Withey at $816k, Jackson at $490k, and Miller at $1.1 million and you're at $57 million. Smith will get a raise to $4-$5 million, if Aminu stays he'll at least be making the same $4 million, and then you add someone with the $5 million MLE. That puts you right around the tax line at $70- $71 million.
They do have a little wiggle room, but if Oden fails, then Oden eating up cap space could keep certain moves that push into the tax from happening, like Evans for Batum which would increase payroll by $1 million.
too slow

The Heat sent their head coach and we sent "representatives"? I'd notice that if I was Greg.
