re: Small caliber deer rifle recommendations?

It uses speed way more then it uses power. You wont find many people who will place a 243 on a shoulder and expect a decent result. It's just not ment to do that. It was no designed for larger game like deer, but we've made bullets large enough that it is capable of taking deer. Speed is its biggest advantage.

Alright well I'll agree to disagree then.

I have a .270 WSM and 30-06.

.223 loaded with 62gr Nosler Partitions. Make sure you don't buy a cheap Rossi as the barrel twist might not be able to handle anything above 55gr.

you must be a bad shot or something
For decades the 30-30 was the best light kicking, handy deer rifle around and it is still deadly inside 200 yards. Any of the 243 - 7-08 calibers mentioned in a bolt action will work. But the situation mentioned in the OP seemed like the perfect excuse to buy a cool little lever action.

.270 and shoot managed recoil. You get a bigger hole in deer with good blood trail but it doesnt kick bad.

while i know a 223 will kill a deer, and im confideny i could place the shot in the spot to do it, i just wouldnt feel comfortable carrying anything less than 100 grains of lead into the woods for deer. Too many factors to go wrong

I have a 30-30 my paw paw won in a poker game and it has killed many but I wanted a new rifle anyway

That is why the Nosler rounds are employed. They are double capped and have excellent penetration. My son has shot 11 deer with his .223, the largest being a 190lb buck, and all have dropped on the spot. I would not shoot a deer with a 55gr FMJ but I have no problem using the Nosler. The only people I have ever seen complain about the size of the round are those who have not shot a deer with one.

The 243 is a good gun. It just requires that you take good shots and don't miss. My 7mm is a lot more forgiving because I know I'm going to cause an extreme amount of damage wherever I hit. The 243 needs a proper lung/heart shot.
All rounds require a proper shot. I'll take an accurate shot with a 243 0r 30-30 over sprayin and praying, or flinching before the shot with a magnum.

Uncles ex used to use a .223. She couldnt shoot for shite. Lead to many a deer lost from poor shot placement.

no truer statement out there..... got a but that spent well over 5k on a 300 mag rig.. and is 2 for 12 shooting with it...

There is absolutely no reason to shoot a marginal caliber like a .243 when you can get a much more reliable performer in the 7mm-08 while maintaining negligible recoil.

I like the 234
It can and has killed plenty of deer,
But I think I'd pass on it for either a 260 or 7mm08
The only downfall to the 260 is lack of popularity

My son shot his first few with a 223 and the next few with 243. He has never lost one but made some high lung shots with the 243 and they ran 75 to 90 yards in a pine thicket with little to no blood. Him shooting the 270 with managed recoil has made my job easier. I also agree with the 30 30. they make a good hole.
