New to watching soccer. I watched some of the games last June on the ESPN networks and a lot of the players who looked to be our better players then are not playing tonight like Altidore, Bradley and Dempsey. Why is this? Do we keep a big roster and play different players for different tournaments? Like I said just getting used to following the team and tuned into the game tonight and it seems like half of the team is different.

Nah, Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley are nothing but scrubs compared to Kyle Beckerman and Michael Parkhurst.

This tournament is not a historically prestigious so we are mostly using youngsters, secondary players, and older guys who may have 1-2 years left at the international level.

Even with the new CONCACAF rules about Gold Cup champs, I bet teams will send their B teams in the years of World Cup qualifiers.

Yes. This tournament is essentially a mix of fringe veterans and youngsters who have alot to gain by proving themselves. Our Europeans based players(aka the bulk of our studs) are about to start their club seasons so they are overseas already in preseason w/ their clubs. This tourney is a try out of sorts for some players to make the plane to Brazil next summer.

The only guys you'll see in Brazil from tonight's roster are Beasley, Donovan, possibly Holden, and maybe Goodsen and Mix/Corona/Shea/Orozco Fiscal as subs

Basically the guys whose roster spots are secure are at home, klins is figuring out who will make up the rest of his squad

Dempsey and Bradley are subs when Torres and beckerman are playing in their club teams for the North Pole.

The Gold Cup the year before the World Cup gets B squads. The Gold the year after the World Cup gets A squads.

The winner of the 2011 Gold Cup qualified for this year's Confederations Cup so that's why we sent the A squad. The 2013 Gold Cup winner advances to a Confederations Cup playoff game with the winner of the 2015 Gold Cup.. so not winning this one isn't that big of a deal since you still have a chance to qualify for the Confederations Cup in 2015.. And also you need to give your guys some rest during WC qualifying.

It would be big for the US to win both the 2013 and 2015 Gold Cup and auto-qualify for the Confederations Cup. There won't be a playoff if the same team wins both. And we're in a great position to take care of 2013 this month.
