I don't understand the obsession with the Yeti ice chest.

I have used Igloo ice chests my enire life and have never had a problem with one. I understand that the Yeti has much more insulation and is bear proof but since I live in Louisiana I am not terribly worried about bears breaking into my cooler. I also have not had problems with ice melting away in my igloo even in the dead of summer while fishing all day in open water with no cover. Some ice does melt but not enough to make me want to spend 10 times as much money for an ice chest. I can buy 10 Igloo's for one big Yeti. Can you explain the justification for buying such a thing? Is it some sort of status symbol?

as absurd as it might seem to consider a cooler a status symbol...

yes, it has become a status symbol

I could create a watch. I'll call the Rolex.

I'll make that shite out of gold I tell ya. Probable spend about $500 just in gold.

I'll sell that bitch for $12000

All I know is when we take ours offshore, we're in and out of it all day, fill it up with fish and then have some ice left over for the next day. Part of that is also the ice we use, DI ice ftw. Not to mention we can't tear that damn ice chest up. It just handles the wear and tear of hard use better than any other cooler we've used.

I don't get it either. Pelican makes a better box for less money.

I mean for a beer ice chest, it is just like any other. Keeping ice while fishing all day it works very well.

and FTR, I had yetis before yeti was cool and I do not have a sticker on my truck and or a yeti trucker hat.

If I ever own one, it'll be for the same reason I get a king ranch f150, 60" TV, or Rolex watch. Because I can.

What if you go fishing 2 days or even 3? What if you spend a week at the hunting camp? Dove hunt in South Texas when it's 100 degrees?

Yetis are meant for cold storage, over long periods of time. Regular igloos are not.

Don't know a soul who owns one. This obsession seems to be regional.

I got a bigass Pelican for my graduation. I'd never buy one but I'll use the shite out of it since it I got it. It is durable and sturdy as hell but its also heavy as frick. Does keep ice for a long time too.

I totally agree with you, I don't understand how someone can spend that kind of money on an ice chest. My plant gave me one, I sold that bitch, bought an igloo and still had money in my pocket.

I don't care how awesome the outdoor channel talking heads say they are, if you keep opening the lid to get a beer in south louisiana heat the ice will melt the same

The only yeti i have is a roadie 20. If you are going in and out of it for drinks it doesn't keep any better than an igloo. Biggest advantage is that you can use it as a step stool or extra seat in the boat. Plus i haven't broken anything on it yet but have cracked every hinge on the igloos i have. Just about every one of them has had new hinges and new hold open straps on the inside.

If you forget to strap the yeti down in your boat you'll still own it when you get there. An igloo won't bounce twice before somebody picks it up.

I must add that I won a Yeti "Roadie" at a DU banquet this year. It is 7.5 qts, with a SS handle, basically a $220 "Playmate" or whatever Igloo used to call their similar sized cooler. While all Yeti products are expensive, the cost of this model seems truly ludicrous. However, It is one of the best things i own. As an extremely active hunter, fisherman, sports fan, and involved parent of two children who travels a lot, it is really useful. I love it, and would buy another one, FWIW.
