I read that Phillips piece. Pretty unfair to Arshavin, whose supposed failure has become a cliche. Lots of hyperbole, very little insight in my opinion. Well-written though.
The problem I have with Wright Thompson is his solipsism. Everything is oriented around his experience, which can be grating at times. That piece about racism in Italy was a prime example.

Getting ready for tomorrow. I can't stand Stoke.
Ramsey Redemption.

Also I think Cox is the weakest writer of the bunch at the sentence level, but he actually understands what analysis is, unlike most commentators. I appreciate that, because I like to analyze and form my own opinions. In general, I don't want to read poetry about the sport, I'd rather watch it. I think there is a growing tendency among writers to wax poetic for paragraphs without saying anything substantive. That annoys me, because generally I want information and insight.

fair enough.
I agree on the AA part. I'm still confused why we didn't give him the freedom we have allowed other new attacking arrivals, but whatever.

We wasted his talents in the 4-3-3. Arshavin was the same sort of languid playmaker Ozil is, except he was more explosive when he made his first move. He just hated defending. If he played in the hole the whole time he was here, he could have been immense. He was awesome for 18 months until we played him as a striker. Christ that was a bad decision.

agreed. his decline shows how important confidence is. his was shattered after that move.
he'll always be in my heart because of his four goal performance and his barça goal.
got some pics to post from photoshoot day yesterday...

Was this an arranged picture or does Podolski just go to practice in his full uniform despite being out for two more months?

team photo shoot yesterday.
there's no way the US gets zelalem unless he turns out to be not good enough.

Spencer Hall is great and just as funny in conversation as he is a writer.
Phillips is hit or miss for me. I either love it or hate it. His coverage of Tennis' grand slams are so self-indulgent.
Wright Thompson is great at what he does and really doesn't misfire.
Michael Weinreib is probably the best in the business of sports writing right now.
S.L. Price is excellent, as well.

Sports writing seems tough because, like any good writing, the spine of the piece has to involve good story telling and character development. But given the nature of sports, there aren't a lot of good narratives to latch onto, just analysis of the game's finite set of rules and inflated attempts at making the same headlines (rivalries, pseudo-controversial soundbytes) seem important year in and year out.

Man, I'd love to see these Stoke goons relegated.

Sure. But more importantly, right now we're at the top of the table.
I can't remember the last time we had three goals off set pieces. And I expect to see more of that now.

Ozil makes so much of an impact on set pieces.

Özil assisted every goal, no? What a man.

I was pretty disappointed when Ramsey chose Arsenal over United years ago. Was thrilled when he was shite for y'all.
This dude has completely changed his shite this season. He's been amazing IRL and is getting me a shite ton of fantasy points. He even went undrafted in our league!
It's bittersweet to see him doing so damned well now.
