How valuable are "Instincts" in managing baseball? re: Rhyme's AB

Seems a lot of managers use "instinctive" thinking when going against the grain on righty/lefty pitching changes, bunting v hitting away to move a man over, playing a shift for a certain hitter, etc.
Does CPM seem to rely on "Gut Feel" or instinct more than others. Sure seems like, given Raph's history with a man on 1st, he takes common sense out of the equation.

2-0 count and he was looking for the pitcher to serve one up for Rhymes
UCLA's coach/UCLA's pitcher has 2 options, serve it up to him, or award him the open base
CPM apparently thought he would serve it up for him I guess

Raph also doesn't have a sac bunt on the year. But given that stat and the fact that he hits well and the fact that hes a senior leader...you still bunt there. Or at least wait for the guy to throw a strike.

Only a Mainieri coached team can have 2 hits and a walk in an inning and never get a runner to 3rd base.

What the hell are you talking about? There wasn't an "open" base.

The coach should know his guys and when they are having off nights. But instincts are over rated.

3rd was open
With 2 outs, you don't think they walk Rhymes on a 3-0 count to face Ibarra?

There was a runner on first. Therefore, you don't say there was an open base.

Did you watch the game last night? Rhymes was batting with a man on first and no outs. What in the hell are you talking about?

While I do think CPM should have flashed bunt but taken the 2-0 pitch some blame needs to be on RR. It was a hit and run and he hit it to the worst place possible. He is supposed to hit it in the vacated infielders spot which will NEVER be 3rd base.

Baseball is totally "instincts" which comes from knowing your players and knowing (not guessing) what to do...Bertman was the master.
Maineri has no instincts....period!
What lost the game was four errors by Ross...the throwing error, the skip throw to second base and two passed balls that were deemed wild pitches...easy plays for a senior catcher who has suddenly began to turn his head on pitches in the dirt despite
wearing a mask. Ross had an abysmal night.
Best of luck to LSU in the losers bracket.

That was definitely not a hit and run in the ninth inning.

Neither of which turned into a run

You're calling nasty curveballs that bounced in the dirt that Ross couldn't keep in front of him passed balls? Wow there are some complete fricking idiots on here today.

Maneiri said it was and why do you think Katz was 10 feet away from second on a hard hit grounder? Blazing speed?

Thank you, although not sure about the hit and run. There's no reason to roll over on a ball and pull an outside fastball. That in itself tells you Rhymes was trying to do too much instead of driving the ball the other way. If he goes with the pitch, we prlly have runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out.

You're right. It was a hit and run. They never said anything about Katz taking off and it didn't look like he had taken off.

The pitch appeared to be low and inside. Katz the at bat before rolled over an outside pitch.
Rhymes was not ready to hit that pitch.....can anyone confirm the hit and run?
