Only 1 team stands between LSU and Mecca... the Oklahoma Sooners. Let's learn a little more about our opponent this weekend.
FYI--Super Regional announcements will be made at the conclusion of the Oregon/Rice game, which starts at 8pm.
Record: 43-19
Big 12: 13-11, 4th
Non-Conf: 23-8
Home: 25-6
Road: 9-10
Neutral: 9-3
OU has been a very streaky team this year with winning streaks of 10 and 13 games in 2013. They also ended the regular season losing 9 of 12 games before sweeping through the Big 12 Tournament and the Blacksburg Regional.
They played 10 games during the regular season against teams who made the NCAA regionals and went 6-4 in those games.
(LSU numbers in parentheses)
RPI: 27 (4)
vs Top 25: 4-2 (12-5)
vs Top 50: 5-3 (30-8)
vs Top 100: 20-12 (36-9)
Avg Runs scored/game: 5.6 (6.6)
Avg runs allowed/game: 3.7 (2.9)
Pitching:
Team ERA: 2.94 (2.47)
The Sooners have had 2 dependable weekend starters. Everyone knows about Jonathan Gray, who is expected to be a Top 3 draft pick when the names are called this week. The number 2 guy is Dillon Overton, who has compiled a nice 10-2 record with a 2.91 ERA. Their 3rd slot has been a rotating cycle this year with Adam Choplick having 10 starts on the season, but Choplick has been ineffective with a 5.35 ERA. Head Coach Sunny Galloway seems to have settled in the last few weeks with Senior lefty Jake Fisher as his 3rd starter. Fisher got the victory in the Sooners' regional clinching win over Virginia Tech on Sunday.
Pitching matchups for this weekend should look like this:
So. RHP Aaron Nola (11-0, 1.82 ERA, 109.0 IP, 76 H, 22 ER, 17 BB, 111 K, .195 OBA)
Jr. RHP Jonathan Gray (10-2, 1.59 ERA, 119.0 IP, 78 H, 21 ER, 22 BB, 138 K, .188 OBA)
Jr. RHP Ryan Eades (8-1, 2.81 ERA, 96.0 IP, 98 H, 30 ER, 30 BB, 77 K, .269 OBA)
Jr. LHP Dillon Overton (9-2, 2.91 ERA, 86.2 IP, 84 H, 28 ER, 22 BB, 76 K, .253 OBA)
So. LHP Cody Glenn (7-2, 2.41 ERA, 82.0 IP, 70 H, 22 ER, 16 BB, 37 K, .234 OBA)
Sr. LHP Jake Fisher (3-2, 2.53 ERA, 53.1 IP, 57 H, 15 ER, 14 BB, 50 K, .282 OBA)
Relief Pitching:
The Okie's top reliever comes in Jacob Evans who has been solid this year recording 9 saves and a 1.92 ERA in 30 appearances. Other key relievers include Ralph Garza (23 APP, 2.79 ERA, 58.0 IP), Kyle Hayes (16 APP, 3.14 ERA, 28.2 IP, 2 Saves), and Robert Tassin (15 APP, 3.29 ERA, 13.2 IP, 2 Saves).
Offense: (LSU numbers in parentheses)
Team BA: .286 (.307)
Team OBP: .362 (.392)
Team SLG: .398 (.436)
The Sooners biggest threat at the plate comes from Junior Matt Oberste who leads the Sooners with a .376 average, 18 doubles, 4 triples, 11 homers, and 60 RBIs on the year. The only other player hitting over .300 on the OU roster is Max White at a .313 clip. Craig Aikin leads the team in stolen bases swiping 16 bags in 22 attempts and is hitting at a .286 average for the season. The next biggest power bat behind Oberste is Jack Mayfield who is 2nd on the team in home runs (7) and total bases (105).
Defense:
OU field's at an adequate .972 mark. (LSU .980)
Blacksburg Regional
Record: 3-0 (3-0)
