Why should Developers and Console Manufactures get money from Used games?

Is there any other mainstream item that gives revenue streams like this?
I can't think of one tangible item that does.

I can't think of one either but it's a unique market.

Any and everything that is copyrighted?
Music and movies in particular are very protected. The only reason they aren't blocking used Blueray and CDs is because that would make piracy worse.
The TV/Movie industry and the recording industry are both counting on their media being 100% digital soon anyway and music is already there pretty much. Then you won't be able to trade it away, share it, etc. So that's another reason they aren't pushing it on physical media though obviously they could.
It's not as easy to pirate console games without modifying your console at a financial cost and the cost of not being able to use your console online to keep it from getting bricked. They know they can do it and all the consumers will do is bitch and moan for a while but will still buy their product.
Developers know piracy happens on PC but they also know once people buy the game on Steam, Origin, etc there is no trading it. The lack of a secondary market on PC makes the piracy sort of a wash.

I agree with pretty much everything except the PC piracy part. Publishers overestimate the piracy rate but it is still really high and a concern for the industry.

I think pirated games have actually gone down thanks to Steam, Amazon, Greenmangaming, etc and their huge sales.
It's a concern but as you said it's overestimated. I would even say if we had real numbers, and not the inflated numbers the industry puts out, that it's probably on the decline percentage wise.

I would hope it's on the decline. Digital distribution has put PC games sales in a really good place but it just sucks to see developers who focus on the PC get sales taken away because of piracy.

Agreed. Sadly the result of this will be DRM whether we like it or not. It sucks but it's also understandable to a degree.
I think Minecraft had a good formula though and they didn't have tons of piracy for as big as that game has been. Give away one version for free to get people hooked.
If more games had demos on Steam it would reduce piracy even more. I admit I have pirated a few games because I couldn't find demos and I wasn't sure if I could justify buying the game. I have bough like 4 out of the 6 I did pirate though because I strictly used it for demo reasons. The other two I didn't like so I didn't buy or keep playing.

Personally I think video games are the only thing that is copyrighted other than movie or music where there is a used market.
If I have a copyright on a photograph I cannot buy the rights "used" I can sell the actual photograph again but no one can re-print it legally due to its copyright. If the new buyer wants the rights it has to get new rights from the original photographer.
This is uncharted waters for sure.

I've pirated probably 150GB worth of games. But I'm a piece of shite and I have come to terms with that.

Like I said, I have come to terms with my shittiness.
If it makes you feel any better I'm so fricking back-logged on my gaming though that Spec Ops:The Line is the only one I've actually played and finished so far.

I'm extremely back logged which is why I basically only buy games for $5 these days.

i have zero problems with the game makers getting a little cut from used games. They will get money from the DLC purchased by the person buying the used game.
But, frick Microsoft for getting anything from the used game market. They didn't do a fricking thing to earn a penny, oh wait, they brought out a marginal new console, so yes, give them money, money, money. If anything they stuck it up the consumers arse, and subscribers arse. Let's also add a very loyal fan base who stuck with having a mediocre machine, but stayed for the online experience. Yeah, stick it up those peoples arse!

I pirate whenever developers do a-hole things like day 1 DLC. Smaller publishers don't do this so I don't feel like it hurts them. When I play free online games like LoL or Dragon's Nest I will make cash purchases if it has held my attention for a month as a sort of self-imposed monthly fee.
And online DRM is able to be circumvented without really that much effort.

Why even play them? It's never a good game. And then shittastic publishers use piracy to justify releasing DRM riddled garbage like simcity.

If companies could do it, they would make it to where everyone who ever played a game had to pay full price.
It's capitalism.
With that said, it's a dumb move in the long run. Console sales have increased through every generation so far. This is the first generation you will see a decrease in sales, mark my words.

Have to disagree. You buy a book once. Then you can sell it to a flea market and they in turn can sell it without the publishers or writers getting a cut. I'm sure there are plenty of other things you can do this with that are copyrighted.
