Hawaii changes all men's teams to "Rainbow Warriors"

quote:
"We initially decided to adopt Warriors as the nickname of our men's teams, since it was used by the majority of our men's programs, including the one with the largest fan following (football)," Jay added. "This is a very subjective and emotional issue and the only clear consensus on this topic over the last 13 years has been that a decision needed to be made to unify our men's teams under one nickname. That goal will still be accomplished as we retain the Rainbow and Warriors names, both of which are near and dear to the hearts of our fans, whom we represent."
Jay said in February that the various names caused confusion and a single name was needed for marketing and branding purposes. He said he consulted with UH coaches and most agreed on Warriors and staying with Rainbow Wahine for the women's teams.
Full story.
Their old football logo. They should just go completely throwback and use that.

For a while, wasn't their football team the Warriors, the basketball team the Rainbow Warriors and the baseball team the Rainbows?
Either way, good move getting back to their roots.

they changed it to simply Warriors a while back b/c June Jones decided it made them sound gay. Says a lot about him IMO.

"ZOMG! A rainbow! Kids won't come here b/c they think we are gay!"
GTFO with that bullshite.

Their old helmets were awesome. I rolled pretty exclusively with the Rainbow Warriors in NCAA 96 or 97

This is like an Onion article right?

This was the uni/color scheme through the 80s and 90s:
This was the helmet mid 70's - early 80s.

The AD at the time came out and said that the nickname was too gay, it was hurting recruits & merchandise sales.

yes and that was mainly due to June Jones pushing the issue with the school.
I just don't buy that it was hurting their sales and recruiting that much. Their main target demo is in Hawaii and would know the difference between a gay pride symbol and Hawaii gear.
I mean, do you think the Bama big money folk worry that Crimson Tide is slang for a woman's menstrual cycle? Should virulently anti gay Christians go back and edit the rainbow out of Noah's story for something else too?
Those are both just as ridiculous as the logic used to dump Rainbow from their name.
No, if they lost any recruits or sales it wasn't b/c the name. Saying it was was a bullshite cop out for people simply failing at their job.

So they added a red/yellow stripe to Tulane's uniform. No big deal.

A guy named, June, has sexual identity issues?
You don't say.

Too bad they didn't go back to this logo sooner. Manti would have stayed home.

Still doesn't look as ghey as the proposed (and fortunately never used) Rowdy Rebel.
