For this well Chevron contracted Unit Drilling rig #201, old rig built in 1981, wasn't used much, but it is one of the bigger land rigs ever built. See link on ultra-deep activity in the area. LINK With record information. To be accurate, all of these records are in regards to land wells. I may be wrong but all of the McMoran stuff was offshore....
I want to say Unit 201 also drilled some cavern wells in Pine Prairie about 5-7 years ago.

Drilled in1980-81. Don't remember who operated the well.
Also a dry hole. The target was 28000 ft and they just continued on.
There was slot of money Rollin around back in the day.
Lot of days drilling 3 ft/hr with a diamond bit

I'll look it up...I'm curious....and I know it's not an Hz, don't know why that was even thrown out as a possibility.

how long does it take to make a trip , pull bit & go back to bottom of hole

This link is from the year 2000, but after a quick check of the state database, I don't see any others drilled deeper in Louisiana between then and now (not sure about the entire US).

Deepest borehole drilled in Louisiana: Martin Exploration #1 Eckart in 1981, St. Landry Parish, 25,703 feet total depth (compared to the deepest borehole drilled in the United States: Lone Star Producing #1 Bertha Rogers in 1974, Washita County, Oklahoma, 31,441 feet total depth)

Some of those deep Springer wells in Oklahoma have been monster gas wells. I'd have to check my old Tuscaloosa books laying around but the deepest wells there had to have been low 20's, and that would be in the most downdip locations. Judge Digby was the deepest I think maybe around 22,000' at the most.
The McMoran wells referenced in the article on page one are now owned by Energy XXI and are the Peterson and Landers wells. They are drilling a 3rd well there now.

Havent talked to them in a while but there guidelines were operating temps to 440F+ and they were expecting a BHP of +/- 27000 psi.

That sounds like some expensive iron and processing.
Hopefully this will fare better than some of the other ultradeep gas tests. If not, this well cost is pennies out of Chevron's pocket but a bigger hit to MMR and EXXI.
I'd love to see the well log. Maybe in a couple of years when it becomes publically available. Speaking of which, I wonder if the Davy Jones logs are public yet.

Me and you both. I'd also love to see the final cost and a wellbore schematic showing how many different casing strings they had to run.

I think they are, may have to do some digging to find them.
MMR is gone, this project killed them, they were acquired by Moffetts mining company. Basically he bought himself to bail his himself out, think they bought Plains to.

I think the well cost of this "Lineham Creek" prospect is at least 200 million dollars, based on an article from a while back. But I don't know if that includes the completion (doubt it). The tubing string and wellhead alone will cost millions of dollars, not to mention any kind of facilities to process this gas.

The reason they are still drilling is due to deepening the well another 1500'. The Trip time is what is killer. I can't really comment much more.

The Lineham Creek prospect has already encountered pay shallow of the Wilcox objective in the Yegua formation.
It is gonna be a beast and much easier to complete, regardless of its reservoir qualities at the Wilcox IMO.
And MMR is not "done". They have been bought out, along with PXP, by a huge company with more access to cash, so I would assume they are gonna pour more resources into completing(fracking) the davy jones and its companions.
Could be wrong on that last part, maybe they just call it quits after billions spent??

I'm wondering if they can even get a well log at temperatures that high. I heard they were just going to get cores.
Posted on 5/13/13 at 3:07 pm to TheIndulger
There are some tools out there that will touch that temp. Now the Davy Jones stuff.. Probably wont be able to Frac that bc of borehole dimensions are too small. Friction would be unreal.

Yea they are not "done" bad choice of words. Moffett just bought it with his other company to bail it out. Last I heard DJ is looking like its shot. They still have the BlackBeard and Lafitte projects going on last I checked.

Off topic but anyone familiar with BlackElk. Sense the incident on their platform have heard they have been headed down hill. Talks of President being forced out and possible selling out or going belly up? I know they had over extended themselves with all the purchasing they were doing but didnt think it was anywhere near that.

I bet the frac gradient is unreal. They would screen that out pretty quick I would guess, if they can even get anything to force in that high pressure formation.

Black Elk was headed in that direction long before the incident in grand isle

The fact that they are considering fracking the Davy Jones well is unreal to me. The bottom hole pressure and temp is crazy high, now they want to frac it?
It is difficult to understand how frac's effect reservoirs at 8,000' let alone 30,000'.
I think there is little doubt that this sub salt Wilcox play is working though, see Anadarko's new discovery (Shennadoah or something)
Now they just have to figure out how to complete it!
