Yes but shell island and Chenier ronquille have been on the books in some stage or form for awhile now. They are the last two pieces, along with caminada headlands soon going to construction, to complete the total rebuild of the Barataria chain. Breton was just sortof out of left field.
Side note: the usual public rabble is "rebuild the barrier island first, then worry about the other stuff!" Now the state will be able to say in Barataria "done." Over roughly the last decade every single island will have been rebuilt from Fourchon to Sandy Point.

Yea I know, saw something awhile back that said if they are found gross neg they could be on the hook for 15+B, thats a lot of coin even for them. Not saying that number is correct just remember seeing it somewhere. Mexico is bringing new suits as well.

If they are found grossly negligent the penalty per barrel spilled would bring them in the 17-20 billion range. If not grossly negligent, divide that number by 4. Still a lot, but not nearly best case for LA coast. If LA could get them to a settlement figure in the 13-16 range, they would be utterly stupid not to take it.
As for Terrebonne system: most f their islands were rebuilt even before Barataria, but their design lives are up and they are up shite creek being so far from the river and ship shoal for good sand sources. 30+ miles to dredge and pump is $$$$$$$$$. I suspect the Barataria focus will shift to diversions and barrier island building focus will shift back to Terrebonne over the next decade.

The sad part is whatever the state gets for the restoration you can probably divide that by 10 and thats how much will actually go to it.

I saw a plan for a ridge with BI being the terminal point. I knew that would never fly. Probably getting refurbished because the rookery goes under water on a high tide. The CI chain beach front had the berm put up during spill, so BP wasn't going to pay for that again.

As bad as it sounds, I think we need BP to stay involved after the money changes hands. They have leverage in keeping our shameless leaders from misusing the funds as they will certainly try to do.

Can we go ahead and just rename it the Lower Mississippi Shipping Channel once it passes Baton Rouge?

I'm not going to get excited until shovel is put to dirt and these assinine studies yield to actual action.

These are shovel ready jobs.

No offense to you, but I've learned over the last 4 years how absolutely meaningless the words "shovel-ready" are. It will be 2-3 months before they even start receiving bids. Then it will be another 4-6 until both parties have signed. Then you have to hope it didn't get Greensteined somewhere in the process.
I don't think it's bad to remain skeptical at this point.
