Alabama handgun transportation law: need verification

So I am sure we all travel to or through Alabama from time to time, and I remember a while back thinking that Alabama had some very weird gun laws in regards to transporting them. I looked it up again, and found this excerpt from a message board...
Questions:
1. Can any one verify that this is true?
2. What kind of retarded law is this? How can you be free to open carry but not have it openly in your car. I can't believe a state in the south would require a 'permit' for vehicle transportation.
quote:
The State of Alabama does recognize pistol licenses or permits to carry concealed weapons issued by other states who will recognize Alabama pistol licenses. [See the list posted above.] Also, a person may carry or transport a long gun (rifle or shotgun) without a permit. A person may lawfully transport a firearm, including a handgun, from one state in which they are legal to possess to another state without a permit as required under Alabama law, provided the following conditions are met:
1. The firearm is unloaded.
2. Neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle.
3. In case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment, the firearm and ammunition shall be in a locked container other than the glove box or console.
Questions:
1. Can any one verify that this is true?
2. What kind of retarded law is this? How can you be free to open carry but not have it openly in your car. I can't believe a state in the south would require a 'permit' for vehicle transportation.

Go to www.handgunlaw.us
Click on the state of Alabama (It's the one that looks like a schoolkid's mirror image of Mississippi).

They are true and they are retarded.
For being "gun friendly" this transportation law is a bit ridiculous.

Get a Louisiana Concealed Handgun Permit -- problem solved.

Yep, that's what it comes down to.

In TN it's worse. If you don't have a CCL you have to have 3 steps before your gun is ready to be fired. Load magazine (bullets and mag must be separate), load gun (magazine and gun must be separate), fire.

So if a cop in bammer asks me if I have a gun, do I have to answer or can I plead the fifth.

I'm glad my permit makes this whole process null and void.
But good god that is ridiculous.

It's true, and I agree, it's a retarded law.
I live in Kentucky but travel back home to gumpland occasionally.
I much prefer Kentucky's gun laws.

Reason #3,763 that Bama sucks.
OK, not really, but that law does suck.
I thought Gumps had more gumption than that.

Not really. Never given anyone grief that had a permit. There is a bill currently being discussed to change this for what it is worth.

I don't understand why anyone with a handgun would not have a CCW permit. If Alabama doesn't reciprocate with your state, then bitch to your own state government.
And yes, the law is stupid and just about nobody follows it. You'll probably get pulled over by the one a-hole cop who will though.

I can answer that for you: A lot of us don't want our name on any official government list of gun owners.

This is the issue. We don't have 'permits' here in LA except for CC. Most people would like to open carry and/or transport without having to obtain a permit.

1. Move to AL.
2. Contact your new state legislators/run for office yourself.
3. Change law.
I hate MA gun laws but it does me no good to complain from another state.

I have a CCW in AL and it specifies it can be carried in a vehicle, fully loaded as long as it's not on open display. It still must be concealed in the vehicle. My 1911 stays between the driver and passenger front seats.Unless you're advertising it,you should be okay.

What else does one do on a message board?
Look the reason why I am complaining is that: 1) I want to be protected at times while traveling (and driving around with it locked or ammo and gun separate doesn't provide for that) 2) It makes no damn sense to avoid Alabama and 'drive around' just because of this dumb law
ETA: I, among others here apparently, think it's a reasonable complaint
I think Bama citizens should grow a pair, voice their demands, and get the law changed
