That leftfield ad panel in Minute Maid is really egregious, but the only thing it's doing is obstructing the view from inside out, in which case you really should be watching the game than trying to look at blue sky. Tough to do in Houston, I understand, but still. I have no problem with that, especially if it garners new revenue.
The only thing that rubs me wrong about that thing in Houston is how tacky it looks...there has to be a more tactful way to put logos on the walls in Houston that a main sail than can be seen by NASA.

Well one of the best things about Minute Maid was that huge glass window that gives views of the Houston skyline. I suppose the same could be said at Wrigley, a big video board in left would block the view of the neigborhood wrigley is famous for. The thing in Houston was put up with 0 regard for the aesthetics. Crane and co. presented it as a program for the kids but what it really is, is a money grab. Making millions for the team. Whatever Ricketts does at Wrigley, I'm sure will be done with preserving the classic look of the park.

Ricketts wants his thumb print so bad on Wrigley. Just a terrible owner.
There's absolutely no reason to put that stupid jumbo tron out in left field. I hope the rooftop owners fight him tooth and nail, not because I care about them, but I think that will make Wrigely look terrible

There is space in Minute Maid to place logos tastefully, especially on the tan piers/wall from the left field line to centerfield. I don't know that Ricketts has the same luxury at Wrigley. At the very least, he has more resistence because of the deal that the Cubs share revenue with the rooftop owners looking into the park.
In that deal, I don't know if it dictates the Cubs can or cannot alter Wrigley or any sight lines.
I guess my point about Houston is that I don't hate the ads or the logos, I just don't think they thought it through, tactfully.

As a Cubs fan for over 30 years, I'm at the point where I don't care about Wrigley anymore. I hope it's preserved. But I'm tired of having the best ball park in baseball and one of the worst teams. I'll take the opposite now.

I definitely understand what you're saying. I guess a lot of younger Cubs fans have been brainwashed into the glory of Wrigley and that being the only good part of the Cubs. When I think of the Cubs, I think of a few players, but mostly Wrigley. It's bigger than the organization, because that's how the Cubs have been advertised: a shitty team in a beautiful stadium.

what exactly is beautiful about wrigley? I love the ivy and i think its cool how its in a neighborhood but i dont think its very pretty at all. In fact quite the opposite.

Have you ever been to a game there? It is fricking phenomenal. Yeah, the amenities suck and it is cramped and old and shite, but the game day atmosphere is unparalleled. Definitely the best experience of any park I have been to.
The atmosphere is what makes it "beautiful". The ivy, marquee, scoreboard, etc all are really cool as well. I think those things are beautiful.

The old stadium, the bleachers, the old scoreboard, etc.
It's a throwback and experience that is so hard to replicate at an MLB game. I mean, I'm biased, but it's my favorite ballpark to watch a game in, Fenway right behind it.

Let's just say they do move to another location in the greater Chicagoland area. Who's to say the new park won't have some of the old Wrigley preserved in the new design? The new park could have brick and ivy. After that, what's so great about it?
ETA: They can recreate the old scoreboard, the marquee, everything...

There's going to be more night games too, right?

I think a lot of that "experience" has less to do with the park itself, and more to do with hot sluts and sucking down Dog Style with the hipsters.

Don't sign a New contract with rooftops if you planned on a money grab. Ricketts wants his thumb print so bad on Wrigley. Just a terrible owner.
Based on what?
And ricketts didn't sign the contract (if it really is one, which is a topic of debate) the tribune company did.
Also they're planning on pushing the wall out and making sheffield a 1 way street so it won't be blocking the rooftops view and if it does you're talking about one roof top and minimal obstruction...the other sign will be see through like the toyota sign that currenlty occupies the spot for the new video board.
Cubs need this badly. And i'd love to know why ricketts is a bad owner?
As for the 'threat to move' he didn't use it at all publically when he was negotiating with emanuel and tunney, even when rosemont (i think it was rosemont) offered to build them a stadium. I don't see a problem with saying the cubs need to consider it. Wrigleyville owners want the increased property values and traffic that come with teh cubs but they want it on their terms. I'm fine with a hollow threat to push things along.

That's the request. Would take effect this year too. There are caveats about how many they can plan because mlb can 'request' you make a game a night game and there is also a caveat about having a concert that would count as a night game.
but yes, they want more night games and 3:05 start times for friday games.

i agree...finally an owner established a plan for the ball club that has an end goal, not to mention the plan trickles down to all levels of the farm system.
There was a time i went to wrigley 20+ times per year (sadly it's much less now) and the place needs a facelift badly. Ricketts dressing up the old girl is just the cherry on top of what his other plan is
Assuming the debt schedule for paying himself and other lenders back for buying the cubs isn't as dire as some would like you to believe then i think the guy is doing a great job so far.
