Last night I was reading that golf book I referenced earlier in the thread. In the chapter about starting the downswing, there was one section that reminded me of our conversation a couple days ago:
quote:
These actions in this one area of the swing produce bad shots in such astronomical volume that the short game, no matter how good it is, can't take up more than a little of the slack.
We will say without fear of contradiction that a player who makes these moves and still gets around in 86 on a good day would cut ten strokes from his score if he made the right moves.
So, what are the golf downswing magic moves? There are 3 moves: (1) Move the hips laterally to the left while (2) keeping the head back and (3) making no effort whatever To move the golf club.
This reminded me exactly of what you said the other day... Don't know if that helps at all, but I thought it was funny that I read that so soon after you said you were experiencing the same shite.
On a different note, going to play at Meadowbrook Farm in Katy, Tx tomorrow afternoon. And looked at the forecast for tomorrow and it will be sunny with 20 mph winds. Thankfully I rarely get the ball more than 5 feet above the ground (hyperbole), so the wind should frick my playing partner more than me hahaha

You don't know how many time's I've heard "you threw away 12 strokes" or "you turned an 82 into a 95". and in most of those rounds, short game accounted for maybe 1 or 2 of those strokes on a bad bunker shot or chip, hardly ever on putting. My long game can usually hold up for 1/3 of a round but it is usually my demise. I believe the above quote to be 100% true. If I wasn't so good with the short game, I firmly believe I wouldn't scare 100 right now.

I really need to start practicing the short game more. I practice putting a lot, but rarely go practice chipping at a facility. I occasionally practice hitting rubber balls in my apartment but that is probably doing more harm than good...
I'm hoping my irons are better tomorrow when I play. Practicing keeping my right elbow in has helped tremendously in only 1 day hahaha Going out for a long practice session tonight after work since the ole lady is out of town for a few nights.

I hardly ever practice, so I can't really reap the benefits. Part of my problem is not trusting my short game enough to not go for everything, which is a mistake. La Tour has a par 4 that i'm sure plays about 500 yards with the route I usually take, so most times I have a 3 wood in. I should probably hit a 6 iron, trust that I can get wedge in to 15-20 feet and have a reasonable par putt, but dignity will not allow me to lay up on a par 4 while lying 1 in the fairway ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

making no effort whatever to move the golf club
Wtf does that mean?

It's a way of saying let the hips start the club back to the ball. Don't think "hands first" when bringing the club face back to impact.

No. It's a way of saying let the shoulders bring the club back.

The third magic move for a good golf downswing consists of making no effort to move the golf club... Say what!?
The golf club, of course, will move. It will be moved by the shoulders.
What we mean is that no effort should be made with the wrists, hands, or arms to make the golf club move.

The few lessons I've taken he emphasized right hip to start my swing, left shoulder to start my downswing.

Back to the ball, or to the top of the backswing?
ETA: frick it, I don't care.

Most of my problems come from baseball. Trying to keep weight back and not keeping enough lag through the downswing
ETA: exactly the opposite of what I should be doing![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

Agreed, wording was just confusing

Nobody answered me about Cypress Bend earlier. The Baton Rouge crew got stuck on shoes or some shite. Anybody ever played it? Heading there tomorrow for a practice round if it's not raining then playing a scramble on Friday
It's a tricky course and pretty tight. Lots of elevation changes off the tee and severe dog legs on some holes where it's better to just throw a 5W or 3W out there then try to cut the corner. I played it march '12 and the greens and traps were in pretty poor shape, hopefully it's better now. It's a pretty fun layout, very different than courses down here.

Start the swing with shoulders, hips will follow.
Start the downswing with hips, shoulders will follow.
The free fall people talk about with the club dropping at the beginning of the downswing is created by a bump in the hip.
Over active hips to begin the backswing will suck the club inside. Over active shoulders on the downswing will produce and over the top swing. Both are bad.
