Let's face it: Bioshock Infinite's gameplay devolved over it's development

I remember seeing videos where Elizabeth would conjure up a storm and Booker would zap it with shock jockey and it would fry all the enemies on the screen. i remember seeing Elizabeth use the Return to Sender power herself, which Booker threw with a telekinesis vigor. I read somewhere that the doors attached to the freight hook tears were usable and would make you pop out somewhere else on the battlefield. I remember seeing the environments as huge and sprawling, and the finished game feels very tight and more tunnel-esque in comparison. There was one badass part in a trailer where Booker bucking bronco's a guy into an oncoming freight train on the skyline.
I feel like the game that Irrational was trying to create was just too ambitious, and with each subsequently released video, they took out more and more gameplay elements that they had shown before. In the first ever trailer, the city is clearly able to float by giant air balloons, and one building even rockets upward via jet thrusters blasting hot air under the balloons. I feel like the story evolved by adding the quantum mechanics aspect, but the gameplay devolved and became more of a run-of-the-mill shooter. Does anyone else feel this way?
In no way am I saying it's a bad game. It's a GREAT game and I'm on my third playthrough. I'd be lying, however, if I said I didn't think "Damn, what could've been" a lot of times during my playing

Two words...Focus Groups
This is the reason many things get axed in video games and in the entertainment industry all together.

It was always going to be a run of the mill shooter. It's a first person shooter, even with all the window dressing they took out. Doesn't mean it isn't a superb linear game though, just that it has limits and it colored between the lines.

i saw you responded and immediately assumed it'd be "frickin EA..."

100% accurate
Still a great game, could have been even better.
What I felt at times playing the game was that it was almost limited by the fact that it had to be a FPS. There were times while playing where I thought this game doesn't even want to be a game, it just wants to be a movie or a book.
I loved it, but this isn't the first time I've seen this with a game either. It happens quite often actually. Over promising and under delivering is a major problem in the industry.

Nah man, this thread is more involved than what usually gets posted up. I'll throw in the EA hate on the lesser threads

Definitely. Irrational is definitely handicapped in a way because they HAVE to make the game a shooter in order to make back all of the money it costs to produce. Great point.

The biggest head scratcher in the commercials for me was them trying to hang Elizabeth. It wasn't Vox trying to hang her, it was the people who supported Comstock who needed her alive. Also, remember one shotting a Handy Man? Neither do I. That is just nit picking though.

Irrational pretty much had to put a "bro" on the game cover and drench the player in gore for the purpose of sales. Some games get away with having to do things in the name of sales but it is painfully obvious that Bioshock could be something more.

Well, I've noticed this for awhile now, but in the past few years box art and TV commercials are targeted at teenagers essentially. Never use either of them as a judge of what a game is like.
Did you see the "calling in the air tonight" Dead Space 3 commercial? God that made me cringe. Or the "Coming Home" Assassin's Creed 3?
Commercials are aimed at people that don't do research on games and just buy them on a whim.

I saw the Dead Space 3 commercial. I didn't like it either. I don't pay attention to AC anymore. The game is too wash, rinse, repeat for me to shell out money for it.

This is obviously the case after viewing the trailers from 10 and 11. If Irrational were able to complete the game the way it was presented earlier it truly would have been amazing. As you said though, I think they were too ambitious and that lead to a very challenging development period. The game was delayed three times and at some point the devs realized that they had to scale the game back. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the DLC brings.

Yup. Nailed it.
I'm really hoping they can bring back some scrapped elements for DLC. It would make it so worth it IMO

I think we'll see something akin to Minerva's Den in Bioshock. If they add in a gameplay mechanic they will crucified for keeping it out of game in the first place.

It's typical in a lot of game trailers now. Tiny print, "not actual gameplay." I mean, just think about the box art for NES games.
Also, look at the skyrim trailer. Despite the scale of the game itself and all its greatness, the trailer still over-embellishes.

Good example, the dragons in that game were so underwhelming.

Too big and ambitious for aging consoles; those early demos weren't gameplay. The 2011 demo is a different story but the content was cut for a reason. I guess I trust Irrational's judgment.

I remember hearing about how songbird was supposed to be more of a consistent nuisance.
his character was neutered heavily in the final product.
it's difficult to tell a good story in a video game because of all trappings that come with being a video game. all the meaningless bloodshed against nameless faceless enemies seems like filler, but if you take it out it ceases to be a game.
