WHY does it take him so long to write a story he says he started 17 years ago?

I honestly think he just doesn't want to finish it anymore. He just wants to enjoy his money and retire.

Check this out
from that site, a more thorough explanation on why it took him so long to write books 4 and 5:
quote:
artin infamously took years to finish Feast after Storm, and even more years to finish Dance after Feast. As we know, this came down to several problems. First, he’d intended to have a five-year jump in the narrative following the conclusion of Storm, but after about a year of writing he realized it wasn’t working and had to start over. Then, once he’d started over, he discovered that while the five-year jump didn’t work for most of the storylines, it worked really well for a few, and it was hard to get them right without it. Then he realized that he had way too many characters and way too much story to fit in one volume as planned, and he needed to decide how to split one volume into two – should he tell half the story for all the characters, or (nearly) all the story for half the characters? (He chose the latter solution.) Finally, he struggled with “The Meereenese Knot”: How to get everyone on the hunt for Daenerys to Meereen, and in what order, and whether to try to have them all arrive by the end of Dance, and what to do with them once they got there, and what to do with Daenerys and company in the interim.
lets hope he doesnt have the same issues with 6 and 7

I think that one prostitute helped him figure out the Meereeneese Knot.

that was an awesome allusion
and re: HBO catching up with the books, book3 will be 2 seasons right? or at least 20 episodes which is basically double the past seasons
if you have 20 episodes/2 seasons for each book, then you'd have to have 40 episodes/4 seasons for the chronological HBO adaptation of books 4 and 5
so it could be 4 or 5 years before they need to start a season based on book 6, which would give him time to finish book 6
ANOTHER THEORY:
while waiting on him to finish, HBO decides to do a season worth of Dunk and Egg stories.

Well, he got it half right......

They'll be merging the events from books 4 and 5 on the show, I would guess over two seasons.
Given the slow pace of GRRM's writing, and the fact that the show is a hit (ie. $$$$$$$$$), I think the most likely scenario is that they spend at least 2 seasons on books 4 & 5, so that they'll be done w/8 seasons for the 5 books. That way they have a good shot to be ready to film book 6 when its already done and not having to wait around.
I assume they'll play around with the story points between books 4 & 5 given that they've already done this in taking Book 2 elements and putting into s1, and taking Book 3 elements into s2 and Book 2 elements into s3.
In fact, if it looks like he's going really slow on the books, and they can make the contracts work, perhaps they'll spend 5 or 6 seasons on books 4 & 5, instead of 4.
I wonder what the odds are of seeing the entire series out in both book form and hbo show? Pretty slim I think.

that's an interesting idea. I haven't read these? Good? I heard that when the 4th is finished they'll be collecting them into a single volume - that's when I'll read them, assuming I read them.

They would have to recast a lot of actors if they waited.

HBO could "finish" the series before Martin.
We could be readding Martin's book 7, 2 years after HBO has Danny sitting on the Iron Throne in a burned out KL, like we saw in her vision.

I don't get it either. JK Rowling had her books done in 11 years and she had a 7 book series.
Guess we'll have to make 2 non-reader book series threads .
Is anyone else concerned about the actors aging throughout the TV series since GRRM is too busy eating donuts around the world?? I.e. Sansa, Arya, Jon??

would lose the audience, maybe a spin-off miniseries.

There are links to them either in this thread or the Crackpot thread. I'm too lazy to find them for you right now.
