i watched the first episode of the first season and liked it so much i immediately purchased the first 4 books and read them in a month, then read the 5th when it came out a month later now I'm just hoping it doesnt take 8 years for the 6th

I had meant to read the books for years, but hesitated b/c I kept hearing how long the wait was between books and the fact that the author was an old overweight guy, so the danger of him dying in the middle kept me away. As did the prospect of waiting several years between volumes and forgetting what happened in the early books.

But after watching the 1st season of the show, I was hooked. And I knew I'd be at the mercy of spoilers (I'm a big spoilerphobe on my TV/book/movies/comics watching/reading!), so it was a no-brainer to read the books at that point (hard to imagine the spoiler terrors of not having read book 3 and watching the show! lol). So I read books 1 & 2 between seasons 1 & 2, and then books 3-5 between seasons 2 & 3 (I think it took me exactly 1 year to read the 5 books that way).

I assume we've got another 3 years until TWOW and another 3-10 years until the story ends (I'm assuming there's a greater than even chance that we're going past 7 books given the history of this series!!). But hopefully with the TV show to remind me of plot points I won't need to reread those monsters! (but perhaps I'll relent before the final volume comes out).

Of course given the deviations from the book, I've got this weird hybrid conception of the story, not being quite sure what I know from the book, show, or imagination!! But it's a cool ride, and I've been enjoying it so far!

We've talked about this a bit before. I just don't see any way that GRRM can wrap up all of these character story lines in two books. I mean, hell, they're still branching out. Most haven't even started to come together. I think 8 is the minimum to finish the story.

I may follow the suggested reread chronology for books 4 and 5 though

that's my plan. the first time i read book 4, it nearly killed me with the new characters, especially after the excitement of book 3. this time knowing more about how they fit in and better chapter order should help out a lot.

Check this out

i plan on renaming my audiobook files so that they will flow in this order

wow!! I didn't know this reading order thing existed! So does it basically place the entire 2 books in chronological order? Has GRRM commented on his views as to best way to read it (I'm generally a fan of following authorial intent in terms of reading a story)?

Dude's too busy taking pictures of mountains and shite. I've never seen a person travel as much as he does. Can't he just get an assistant to sit there on the plane with a tape recorder or something?

Seriously. You'd think all of that traveling would cut some pounds off of his tub of suet.

Especially since from what I've read about where he is on TWOW, it seems to be running a lot longer than he planned. If I had to guess, I'm thinking 9 books, the last of which will come out in 15 years from now in 2028 when GRRM is 80. Lord help us if Alzheimers or clogged arteries get to him!

I know he's allegedly told the HBO people how the story ends. But I thought I'd read somewhere that HBO does NOT have permission to end the story if he dies w/o finishing the books. Is that right? (of course, even if they don't have permission, its possible that whoever inherits the rights to the books could cut a deal, depending on restrictions in his will!).

I thought they were the only ones who did have the rights. He doesn't want anyone else finishing the story for him.

i think they do. GRRM needs to take a lesson from Robert Jordan. His saga got better after he died.

oh...here's something I wrote in Oct. 2012 about the books coming out - my comments are after the <<>> which are quotes from somewhere in the web (wikipedia?):

<<In December 2011, Martin posted a chapter from The Winds of Winter from the viewpoint of Theon Greyjoy. He also announced that another sample chapter would be included at the end of the North-American paperback version of A Dance with Dragons,[13][2] expected to be released on March 26, 2013.[14] (International paperback editions of A Dance with Dragons published a year earlier did not include a new, yet unpublished sample chapter.)[15] >>>

So if they're including Book 6 chapters in Book 5 in 3/2013 - so Book 6 definitely not ready by then!

<<Martin believes the two last volumes of the series will be big books of 1500 manuscript pages each.[18] 400 pages of the sixth novel have been written as of October 2012, although Martin considers only 200 as "really finished"; the rest need revising.[19] >>

If it's going to be 1500 pages, and he's only written 200 by Oct 2012, he's nowhere close to finishing this book!

<<Martin hopes to finish The Winds of Winter much faster than the fifth book.[20] Martin has angered fans in the past for repeatedly estimating his publication dates too optimistically and therefore he has refrained from making hard estimates for The Winds of Winter's release date.[1] A realistic estimation for finishing The Winds of Winter might be three years for him at a good pace,[21] but ultimately the book "will be done when it's done".[9] >>

So 2016 at the earliest??

<<Martin has acknowledged that he is concerned with the sixth and seventh novels not being completed before the time when the HBO series "Game of Thrones" catches up in story line to the novels.>>

If Part 1 of Book 3 is out in March 2013, and they do 2 seasons per book (and it's kind of hard to see how book 4 would take 2 seasons, given how little happened in it!), that means Part 2 of Book 5 will be out in March 2018!

So there's no way this book is coming out before 2016. I'm guessing 2017 will be the earliest!

ahh...maybe that makes sense. He won't allow anyone OTHER than HBO to finish the story. But does that mean if he dies that the story will finish in TV format only??? That's hard to beleive. You know someone would want to take his notes and try to finish it that way, too (a la JRR Tolkein, Dune, etc.).

Or perhaps what we'd get would be a "novelization" of the HBO show.

Man, if he dies, and the HBO show is where the story plays out, how sick would that be???

They'll be merging the events from books 4 and 5 on the show, I would guess over two seasons.
