I know. Didn't come off that way though.
They went on a tangent on my theory why top mounted PSUs in gaming cases went the way of the dodo.

Not to mention it looks terrible imo.

If you're playing at 1080p then you'll be alright

Looking into a new build at the beginning of the new year. Anyone have any suggestions on this build?
i5 7600k
GTX 1080
MSI Procarbon mobo
DDR4 16gb RAM
Corsair CX 750w power supply
Still debating on storage - thinking of 1TB HD and 250gb~ SSD, or possibly a larger SSD. This pc will basically be games only, my older rig will be for work, etc.
Looking to save money in spots if anyone has suggestions on cheaper alternatives.

Buy an i7 or Ryzen, 4c/4t with no hyperthreading is not enough anymore.
The 7700K should drop quite a bit this fall when the 8700K releases as a 6c/12t mainstream cpu at the old 7700K price point.

For gaming?

This is just false if we are talking about gaming.

Yeah WTF will HT do for you unless encoding for streaming on the same machine.

I'll give you guys a little more about what my goal for the build is.
I don't stream, I play very minimal games. I play League of Legends and WoW a LOT. My current PC runs WoW with all my addons and such "fine," meaning 80-90 FPS on 8/10 settings normally, but it'll drop to 40-50 during large raids and such. League isn't graphic intensive so that isn't a big deal.
I do plan on picking up COD:WW2 later in the year. Play OW occasionally, stuff like that.
I just want a nice, solid machine that will last me about what my current build has (about 5 years) at my 1200-1300 budget.
I don't keep up with pc hardware updates to know what is coming out soon or in the near future. My goal with the build is the new year, or a little later after the holidays.
ETA: peripherals - monitors/keyboards/mice etc has been upgraded recently, won't need any of that with budget.
Thanks again for any input.

Alright guys, my home desktop looks to be on its last leg, so time for me to get a new one. I am trying my first build since it is easy as hell, and I will be saving thousands by DIY'ing. I am having a hard time choosing between two setups, so if yall can help me decide on one, I'd appreciate it (or maybe suggest others). I need to build it ASAP.
Obviously bang for the buck is one of my primary concerns. Future-proofing is another, because I keep PCs for 5+ years. I typically have multiple webpages open, a word document or two, a pdf or seven, sometimes an HD video running, a spreadsheet with multiple linked pages, etc. Two 21.5" 1080 monitors. Basically, there is a lot of shite going on all of the time. Must have Quadro, and would very much prefer Intel chip. I do zero gaming.
I will also be using this for Solidworks and ANSYS both drawing and different types of simulations on assemblies anywhere from 1-50 parts I guess. This will not be a work PC, so I won't be drawing stuff every day, maybe 5 or 10 days per month.
I got all of this stuff from pcpartpicker to make sure it is compatible. Main differences are bolded. $2k before tax is basically my max budget, but I stretched the first build.
First build ($2100):
Intel Core i7-7820X
Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU cooler
ASUS Prime X299-A ATX LGA2066 mobo
G.Skill Trident Z 2x16GB DDR4-3200
Samsung 960 EVO 250gb M.2-2280 SSD
WD Caviar Blue 1TB 7200prm HDD
Quadro P2000
Cooler Master Silencio 652s ATX Mid-tower case
Corsaid 760W 80+ Platinum Power Supply
Samsung CD/DVD writer
Win 10 Pro
Second build ($1550):
Core i7-7700k
Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU cooler
ASUS Prime Z270-A LGA1151 mobo
G.Skill Trident Z 2x16GB DDR4-3200
Samsung 960 EVO 250gb M.2-2280 SSD
WD Caviar Blue 1TB 7200prm HDD
Quadro P1000
Cooler Master Silencio 652s ATX Mid-tower case
EVGA SuperNOVA G2 750W 80+ Gold Power Supply
Samsung CD/DVD writer
Win 10 Pro

Are those quadro cards that much better at rendering than say a 1080 ti?
I think one of the upper end Ryzen chips (1800x and up) would be a perfect sweet spot for you in terms of price/performance

Guess he wants DP for Solid Works?

Only Quadro and Firepro are compatible and supported by SW and ANSYS. A GeForce would be unstable, and has been found to be many times.
Most CAD programs are designed for Intel chips IIRC. Looking at benchmark tests, Intel almost always beats AMD. That's why I wanted to stick with Intel.
I also don't do much rendering. It's usually only drawing parts, assembling, and running various simulations.

Yes, most major titles are now optimizing for more cores and threads. 4c/4t is a terrible buy now (which is why TH no longer recommends it for gaming). You either go Ryzen 6c+ or a 7700K+.
PUBG, Wolfenstein 2, Far Cry 5 are all 6+ core optimized games. Hell even 8 threads are starting to get heavily taxed these days.

Those threads do very little for gaming. It is still physical cores.

Meh...
A 7600k/GTX1080 for the purposes he outlined is more than enough imo.
Especially when you can get a 7600k now for around $200 quite frequently.
EDIT: He could also wait for the 8600k and the Coffee Lake benchmarks.
