The last thing I want is for someone to break into my house, steal my semiauto handgun and wreak havoc on the police or the general public, and I'm looking to protect against that. I'm thinking of buying a case like this:

And padlocking it both shut and around a wall stud in my closet. Is that just insane?

Just don't get a semi automatic one. Those are the ones that kill people

For some reason I never thought about it with my J-frame 38, but now that I have a gun that would look really cool being fired sideways I do.

Put it in a coat pocket, or some other unlikely place...

They also make this, it comes with a cable that can be attached to something solid.

Just fold it in a towel in your bathroom closet.

That photo link didn't point back to a product, name? That looks perfect actually. I could open it with it still attached to the stud.

Hiding it does seem like the best option, only my wife wants it to be absolutely out of the reach of my son.

Why not, you are already wanting to wrap a cable around a stud. The small ones, you just cut out the hole in the drywall and bolt to a stud

they make them to fit in a space the size of wall studs(2x4) they are not that expensive. mount it up higher so its behind you hanging cloths

That case cost about $90.

For $50 you can get this LINK
Tether it with a steel cable to something heavy and its still much more secure.

Gunvault is less than $100 at Wally World and you have quicker access to gun if needed

This. You want to be able to have easy access to it when a threat is posed. A criminal isn't going to give you time to open your safe. Hide it in a spot that you have quick access to.
