There aren't many black players in college baseball to begin with

What a hack. Who gives a frick. As if coaches are not recruiting black players and intentially not putting the best product on the field just because they are racist. These idiots need to GTFO.

I'm boycotting LSU football and basketball until Les and Johnny recruit more white people.

But even picturesque Alex Box Stadium, festooned with a mixture of chromatics unprecedented in college baseball, is missing a color from the LSU dugout.

The best players, BLACK OR WHITE, skip college and sign a big-league contract right out of high school.
They also only get partial scholarships.

“We have black players in next year’s [recruiting] class committed, and the year after that,” said Mainieri. “The truth of the matter is that there are not as many [black] kids playing.”
This is simply true. In America, black kids either because of lack of opportunities at an early age or simply by choice do not lean towards baseball as much anymore. I graduated from high school in 1988, and played ball from the time I was 8 and only played WITH a black guy my senior year...and that was the only time that we had ever even had a black player try out. It was also a rare occurrence to see a black player in legion ball, and that was playing against both river parish and metro areas teams.
It's hard to have college players when so few are playing at the high school level.

Our best recruit is black but when he goes straight to MLB that will be LSU's fault.

That article really only uses LSU as an example.
I wouldn't take offense to it. And besides, when we have black players they are pretty darn good.
Chad Jones
Jared Mitchell
Landry was good
I don't see an issue here whatsoever, baseball is not a black sport even in the Bigs. I'm only surprised there aren't more Hispanics playing.

“Quite frankly, I blame the NCAA system,” said Mainieri. “With 11.7 scholarships and the scholarships having to be broken up into small increments, a kid has a better of chance of getting a full scholarship playing football and basketball.”
Well played, Paul. Well played indeed.

That's the point, there is no issue and he forces a race issue.

I thought the article was a very fair description of the current state of college baseball when it comes to black players.
It certainly was not critical of LSU.
It praised Mainieri's record for recruiting black players, even to the point of explaining we lost two black players from this year's team for valid reasons.
Mainieri's comments about the NCAA's draconian scholarship restrictions for baseball is the same complaint Skip Bertman voiced for years regarding the unintended consequence of discouraging kids from poor, black families from pursuing a sport where they can not expect to have a full scholly like they can for football and basketball.
I noticed this past weekend when the teams lined up for the national anthem before Sunday's game that Washington has no black players also.

Imagine the outrage in the black community had this piece been on the fading amount of white players in college football and college basketball.
