One of the weakest plots in movie history for a movie that works. The driving story is so small and weak it could be a high school film project.

This is pretty well incorrect. The plot is actually fairly strong, if not oft repeated. Obviously, the first act sets up the larger central plotline. Like many detective stories, a random event happens one night (i.e. a mistaken identity) that triggers a series of events leading to the unveiling of a kidnapping plot gone bad. Without the first event, the Dude doesn't meet Lebowski, doesn't get involved with the kidnapping plot or, really, the carpet pissers and Maude. While seemingly random, none of these events truly are out of the blue. They all hover around together against the backdrop of a detective story in which a stoned out deadbeat is "relied upon" to "uncover the truth." Obviously, Lebowski is counting on the Dude to be too stupid to figure it out, but as we see, Lebowski, as with all villains in detective stories, underestimates his competition and loses. It really is a pretty classic tale, told with several twists and tweaks of characters to (a) give it new life, (b) satirize the hell out of it, and (c) make it one of the funniest movies of a generation.

The plot is genius in the fact that it literally solves itself before The Dude figures it out. That's the joke and what makes it genius.

If Seinfeld is the show about nothing, then The Big Lebowski is the film about nothing. Walter is obsessed with pointless bullshite and a pointless war; Maude is obsessed with pointless artwork; Mr Lebowski is worth nothing I the end and is merely a vasad; and of course there are the Nihilists who believe in nothing and have absolutely nothing to back up their claims. It's the big joke of the film.

"frick it, Dude. Lets go bowling."

Ooooo sick burn, BRO. You called me a pothead.

I'm not speaking for my generation. The hundreds of thousands of fans of this movie who proclaim it to be hilarious speak for their generation. Why don't you go play in traffic for a bit?

I believe you mean "facade."

And yeah, I agree with you. It's probably a pretty good commentary on the 90s.

To me it's actually one of those movies that gets funnier than that I like more and more with each watching. Those kinds of movies are rare.

Damn that looks bad when I see it quoted back.

I mean it gets funnier than the first time I saw it each time I see it. I like it more and mroe with each watching.

Wasn't trying to burn anyone, but your response does lead me to further validate my suspicion that this movie is mostly funny to burnouts.

Everything you've said in this thread was meant as an attack on me. And that's fine. Your opinion of me is inconsequential. Moreover, it's incorrect. But in any case, I feel sorry that you lack the sense of humor to appreciate the hilarity that so many, including many on this board, have found in the Big Lebowski. If you think only burnouts appreciate this movie, it seems to me your projecting your own insecurities. Either way, if you insist on bashing the movie by bashing its fans (e.g. me), at least know the facts about them. Otherwise your ignorance reveals your stupidity.

Your generation sucks, meth head.

There's a whole lot of young and stupid going on in this thread. Whether you think it's overrated or not, the movie is funny. Quit trying to compare it and enjoy it.

I've posted twice and I can't help it if my generalization of Big Lebowski fans happened to hit a nerve for you.

I said most fans, not all fans of the movie probably wish they lived in Colorado. I have some respectable friends that enjoy the movie and like to quote it as well though. And I wouldn't include "many on this board" as a reference for humor. Remember, there's Blue Mountain State fans here too.

I don't even smoke cigarettes. It's a funny movie. Though I love the Coens and I do prefer Raising Arizona by a wide margin.
