There have been many players who have been paralyzed playing in the NFL. And whenever you are dealing with spinal cord injuries, those are serious. Not just because of paralysis, but death can result.

well it happened in the Arena League...

When was the last time that happened? If it was commonplace I'd get his concern, but when was the last time someone actually died on the field? The only time I can recall was in the 1800s in a UGA/UVA game, but the player's mother sent a letter to the state requesting that football continue on (since there was a motion to quit playing football alltogether).
18 players died in 1904 alone, spurring Theodore Roosevelt to convene a summit of university presidents with the aim of making the game safer. LINK

So the NBA is dangerous because Hank Gathers dropped dead during a LMU game?
Players have died from actual hits taken.
Eve so slight difference in the 2 instances.
I'm sure people have died sitting on their couch watching TV, that doens't make it relevant to this conversation lol.

If he was serious about any of this and wanted to truly make a difference, he would get HGH and other substances out of the game.
Yep.
I like my football with an extra side of steroids, but if he wants to make it safer he needs to implement MLB-esque drug testing.

1. Ruthless drug testing for performance enhancers.
2. Don't lengthen the season or push for more short weeks.
3. Stop allowing equipment to get lighter and and smaller. Players barely wear pads on their legs and shoulder pads are tiny these days. Creates a whole lot more mobility for players and they can launch easier. Baseball did this with bats in college. Same kind of thing.

I don't like Goodell, but he's right on this issue. The NFL should be concerned about severe onfield injuries, and needs to be proactive about preventing them. The NFL lags behind every other major sport in player safety. I rant about the NHL's piss poor record of protecting its players from head shots, and they still do a better job than the NFL.
This is precisely the sort of issue a commissioner should be worried about.

You say he's right on this issue but then say then NFL is doing nothing to protect the player. Goodell is the NFL. If he was right, he'd be doing something, not just talking about it. And not considering longer seasons and more short weeks.

He is right in his fears, but as its been pointed out in this thread, he's doing things like pushing for an 18 game season, or a full season's worth of Thursday night games that suggest he's not fully committed to the cause imo.

Goodell is an arrogant SOB just trying to force his agenda.

IMO this guy is as manipulative and fake as obama....
this moron is concerned about safety yet he wants 2 more games and makes 2 team play on a short week every week of the season now.
I don't know about yall, but IMO most of the Thursday night games last year sucked.
