Just playing a little devil's advocate here. Can you name me another professional athlete who was a starter for a team that won a Championship for both the flagship school of a state and professional team of a state?
Derrick Brooks?
I am pretty sure he is from the panhandle in FL (could be wrong), and I know he won a national championship at FSU and a SuperBowl with TB.
Don't know if you guys remember Alfred Williams (the Saints picked him up mid-season in 1999, but he never played a snap). He won a national championship with Colorado and a Super Bowl with Denver. I don't think he started for the Broncos for those Super Bowl teams.
That's all that I can think of off the top of my head. If anything, this confirms the fact that Devery was a rare form of a "hometown hero"; although, he does not come close to surpassing Derrick Brooks in that regard by any means.

Jamaal Wilkes: Born in Berkeley, California
Played at UCLA: 1971-1974: 3 National Championships
Played for the Lakers:1977-1985: 4 NBA Championships. He won 3 as an LA Laker.
Again I know there is a lot of love for any LSU player on this board especially if they played for the Saints. All I am saying is that he was a pretty good player that was never a #1 or #2 reciever on the team.
And to be completely honest, it did take me some time to find this player

Ahh, if you count other sports, it really opens things up. Read right over where he said "in sports history". But, within the context of football, I believe Devery certainly is rare.

I agree with you it's very rare in any sport.

You sure he was never a #2 on the team? How long you been following saints football?
And i stand by my statement. One of the best hometown stories. Naming one other guy doesn't change that.

Gonna miss him if he does leave. One of my all time favorite Saints.

Bc you did a phenomenal job with the Datty awards, ill stop my valid argument

A guy who has been on the board for under two months and has less than 300 posts is putting down the Datty's...dude come on...seriously

Finding guys with a story like devery is a very rare thing. I think we agree on that point. And he had some moments which will live on in Louisiana/ NCAA/ NFL history for a long long time if not forever. Especially if Brady drops the ball.

You backup your argument that DH has not had ONE OF (not THE) best home town careers by naming 1 other guy that you admittedly didn't know and had to google for some time to find? Then call your argument valid after saying DH was never a #2 receiver which is again, wrong? All of this inside an appreciation thread dedicated soley to DH? You're an idiot and have now been Internet dick slapped and tea bagged in the same thread...shame on you

He had a nice NFL career and I appreciate everything he's done for the saints, but to say he had one of the best hometown careers in sports history is wrong.
Are you the nazi cop who decides where the cutoff for such a general description is.
He's one of the best:
Is he talking one in a million? one in a thousand?
Is he referring to new orleans? Louisiana? all cities in genreal?
Is he talking about saints players? NFL Players? Athletes in general? All people with careers related to sports?
Either you're trolling, looking for an argument, or really just that pathetic to nitpick something so insignificant? Which is it?
I bet you go around to all the food places claiming to have "World Famous _____", and walk in and ask if they have evidence to prove it before you label them big fat phonies.
ETA: i posted this as soon as i read to his post. Then is see there is 2 pages of people giving him shite hahah....owell I'll pile it on i guess.

My Saints jersey is Devery's #19. He has been one of my favorite football players for a long time...

One of the best hometown careers in sports history. And one of my favorite Saints. Never runs his mouth, never complains, he just does his job day in and day out.
If he's gone this year. He will be missed. I'd hate to see him finish his career in anything but a black and gold uniform.
not my boy devery SAY IT AIN'T SO, COACH PAYTON!!

This catch is even more amazing when you watch it in slow-mo. At least to me. Having to reach back against his momentum to catch a dart, and it stuck. And at a huge moment in the game.

I love Devery. I appreaciate what he has done for my two favorite teams in LSU and the Saints. He never complained and always worked hard.
To Devery.
To Devery.
