Central Michigan left tackle Eric Fisher had an impressive Combine and he is making a case to be the first tackle selected over Joeckel. Fisher (6-7, 306) finished in the top 10 with an official 5.05 time in the 40. His 10-yard split was 1.70 and that was one of the better times for the offensive linemen. Fisher did well in the field work and showcased nice technique with good feet. Joeckel remains the favorite to be the first tackle selected, but Fisher is giving the Chiefs, among others, something to think about.
Another Combine stand out was Oregon guard/tackle Kyle Long. He had the third-fastest 40-yard dash time of 4.94 seconds. His 10-yard split was 1.8 seconds. Long looked very athletic in the field work. At 6-foot-6, 313-pounds, Long seems to have the potential to play tackle in the NFL. Long's strong performance at the Combine should help him, and it wouldn't be surprising if his stock steadily rises until draft
From Walter's Football. Both sound like stars in the making to me.

Exactly. And overall athleticism, which is also important. The 40 isn't a key measurement for an OL like it is for a WR or CB, but it is still useful.
You want as many data points as possible in your evaluation.

I just can't wait till the draft to see what we do but we will get a clearer understanding after the combine and pro days

A LT plays 90 percent of the game enclosed in a square area of about 5 yards, especially on a team that throws as often as the Saints. This guy's 40 time is about as relevant as Walter Thomas' backflip.

With a team that throws screens as often as the Saints, you want an OL who can move well...

Agreed, but you don't need to go Al Davis. A 5.0 who can actually block would be better.
Pierre will leave his blockers after 5-8 yards anyway.

That's about footwork and lateral quickness, not 40 time. Jahri Evans ran a 5.25 40. Nicks ran the same.

quickness, technique and strength are better indicators not speed.

For all those times the Guard has to pull 40 yards down the field. quote: When an OL has to pull to get outside on a lb'er or a corner, its the speed that counts, not necessarily his size. Footwork and quickness, not speed.
When ypu have a 300+ lb guy that runs a sub 5.0 40, footwork and quickness are usually part of his build!
And I'll give you a little help, when an offside OL pulls and runs outside and 10 yds downfiled, he ususally has covered at least 20-25 yds at that point AND he doesn't get passed up as quickly because he is faster...duh

Go look up the 40 times for the top ten Lineman in the league.

work on differentiating quickness from speed
I would suggest the 20yd shuttle as a more important drill for OL
Eric Fisher 4.44
Lane Johnson 4.52
Kyle Long 4.63
Joeckel 4.68
Armstead 4.72 which was 18th out of OL

That guy Eric Fisher from Central Mich looked super smooth & natural in all his drills.
He won't drop to us, but somebody will be getting a Joe Thomas-type guy in April.
No chance he drops out of the top 10 let alone down to 15. I've said it on here before and I'll say it again, Fisher should be the top overall pick IMO.

he's definitely gaining on Joeckel if he hasn't already passed him big boards

Nice bump.

Would he replace Bushrod?
With what we have at Tackle right now, sure why not.
If Kromer were still here I'd say go ahead and pencil him.
